Turntables
My early 80s turntable up and died.
I want a replacement that’s nice and effective but not too far up the cost curve. Basically a Honda-Accord-level turntable. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much! |
The Rega (Planar 2 & 3) are very fine turntables & do appear on the used market.
Their companion RB 300 tonearm remains an industry standard. Having owned a couple I can recommend the above with no hesitation. I’m sure you’ll get many other good suggestions. Happy Hunting ! |
Yes - the Rega's are a good choice....also Music Hall MMF 1.3 and 1.5 and Pro-Ject Essential III.
All are under 350 brand new. |
I’m very happy with my Music Hall.

I just pulled the trigger on the Music Hall MMF 1.5. Very excited! The Regas look great but higher $.
Would it make sense to also get a really nice elliptical stylus for that pre-installed cartridge? I don’t feel I’ll do that right away; just curious. Regardless, many thanks! |
Very nice that it has a built in phono pre-amp with RIAA curves. Even 10 years ago when I replaced my amplifier I had the devil of a time finding something with a magnetic cartridge input. Mind you, what I found was fairly high end yet a good value, but the choice was it or nothing! I have an AR deck with a SME III arm that was my father's.

Howdy, here’s a quick update. I really like the MMF 1.5! It sounds and looks great, and it’s clearly several steps up from my old JVC direct drive. That said...
There was a hum initially. I put more space between the wall wart and the speaker wire, problem solved. Also I confess I miss the auto-return feature. The thing runs quiet - no unnecessary mechanisms! - but it won’t stop by itself. But those are just little nits. I thoroughly enjoy my awesome new machine, thanks again for the recommendations! |
