I have started my first guitar of 2022, an FT-000-C-WRX-Kerala-JB/2 . . . perhaps I need to rethink my nomenclature, but I probably won't. It will be White Spruce over Pear.

That Pear looks so interesting!

You can't change the nomenclature now--I'm just now getting the hang of it! :D
And that pear looks mighty fine... |
White Spruce! :)

I got a note from Walter Strauss today re an upcoming gig at The Freight in Berkeley on April 20, 2022. Yeah, I know . . . .In any case he included links to a couple of his tunes I hadn't heard before. These YouTube videos were performed on the Pernambuco JB-16 he bought from me a couple of years ago.
Dixie Flyer If It's Magic |
That White Spruce is really handsome. Nice score!

I hadn't heard the music of Walter Strauss before reading your post Bruce. Wow, what a musician! I've gone through a dozen of his videos on youtube.
You're a lucky luthier to have someone like him with one of your guitars in his hands. And he's lucky to have your guitar. A beautiful combination. Ryan |
I could listen to Dixie Flyer all day! Thanks Bruce, for sharing…!

Here are a few pics of my recent progress on the new Pear 000C:

I like the subtle streaking in the fretboard and it seems harmonious with the koa rosette.

The new pear 000 is coming along. It is actually a new template for me, as I redesigned my 000 a couple of guitars ago and this is the "Kerala" version, which means 13 frets to the body. I shortened the body a fret's worth, and widened the upper bout slightly, not unlike what Martin did to the 000 when they created the OM, but less change all around.

I got the Peone/Tentalones in today, and have just one tine little bit of "side" still to go. This little piece is one of the secrets to my fully mitered sides, which do not then require binding.

I love the look of that Pear! Is pear easy to work with or do you find unique challenges with pear uncommon to other woods? In other words, does its properties remind you of working with maple, mahogany, rosewood, or anything else? In any case- I think it will be phenomenal looking, Bruce!

This is my 4th Pear guitar. I have found it works a bit like a higher quality American Cherry. It has a finer texture and far less flaw, at least on the high end pieces I use. Virtually poreless from a finishing POV, it bends relatively easily with minimal scorching, and sands easily as well. It is a bit brittle and care must be taken lest it break cross grain.
