80/20 Strings - which ones do you favor?

I recently switched from PBs to 80/20s on my 2011 J45 and it made a big (positive) difference in sound. Never thought I would like strings as much as these.

I have tried three varieties on the guitar. Ernie Ball Medium Light Earthwoods seem to sound the best to me followed pretty closely by Gibson Light Masterbuilts (both sets seem very similar in feel). I tried a set of the new Light Martin Authentic Acoustic 80/20s but found them lacking - a bit too bright and brittle sounding.

Anyone favoring other varieties of 80/20s? Please share your recommendations!

Thanks!

Give D’Addario uncoated light 80/20 EJ11s a try and see what you think. As with most strings installed new, it takes a short period of time for them to settle down. I’ve been employing them for bare fingerstyle but not with a pick.

I’d be interested in reading your findings compared to the others you’ve already tried.

A good J-45 with 80/20s is an excellent match.

John Pearse

Pretty much for all the different alloys I’ll give John Pearse a try. Rarely, if ever disappointed.

I'm Liking

Curt Mangan 80/20 round cores & Sono Tone 80/20s.
Recently tried Phillipe Bosset 80/20 which sounded good
out of the package and then completely died in 10 days, maybe
because of the humidity.

John Pearse New Medium.

I'll second the John Pearce and Curt Mangan round cores 80/20's. Both are great. The CM strings last longer for me.

Gibson Masterbuilts...on the J45.

My new Thompson loves LaBella 80/20 Golden Alloys. Elixir less so. Next up Pearce.

I use, prefer and endorse John Pearse 80/20 strings.

I like 80/20's and I've tried a lot of them. I like D'Adario 80/20's the best. They start out with a real jangle then just keep getting better until they die fast.

When it comes to 80/20s, I like and use John Pearse strings.

Best,
Jayne

Ever tried the Masterbuilts?

The Earthwood Bronze are quite warm for a bronze and they suit my guitar quite well. If you are looking for a louder, more sustaining bright string then Rotosound Super Bronze is worth looking at. The core wire is exposed where it goes over the saddle. They used to be called 'Country Golds'.

My favorite 80/20s are John Pearse.
