New Wood & Steel

Got the new one on Tuesday and have been picking it up for short reads. Nothing really different. Great photos. Great Andy updates. However, I can say that is particular W&S should be used in a master-level business marketing program as the example of how to promote a business. Capos, picks, guitars, slick photos, stories, opinions, notes from the boss.... superb. An advertising magazine without having any distracting ads from a single competitor like a normal trade magazine. Kudos Bob and Andy.

May I ask which Wood & Steel issue it is? The Taylor website (with pdfs of Wood & Steel) still shows Winter 2019 as the most recent (with a Grand Pacific on the cover). Did you get a more recent one? (fingers crossed, it's been a while!)

Thanks!

That would be the one that just came in the mail volume 90 for summer 2019.

I agree with your assessment of Taylor's marketing strategy. Bob and Kurt have always set the bar high for how their company and philosophy are represented through their advertising. Top notch photography and well written ads that make you slow down thumbing through a publication to actually read and think about what they do.
Bob's book, Guitar lessons, should also be required reading in every business 101 class. His approach to building a company applies to any startup, not just a guitar company.
The best thing is that it isn't just words....Taylor actually does build beautiful sounding and playing instruments that are innovative and also guitar art. They back up their product through a fantastic customer support program. You really do feel like part of a big family when you buy a Taylor guitar.

Whether or not you like Taylor guitars, it is hard to argue with their success.

Correction. It’s volume 94.

It is not unusual for the paper copy to lead the PDF web version by a few weeks.... I have often received the paper version by snail mail well before they updated the web site. I haven't seen mine so far.

ManyMartinMan 07-11-2019 05:20 PM

If they’re mailed from California, maybe we get them first due to proximity.

Yes, I got mine today in San Diego.

One interesting article is on the V-braced 12-strings Grand Concerts they're releasing (552/562/352/362), using only 6 bridge pins, instead of the usual 12 bridge pins. I'm curious to try one out.

Looking forward to receiving my copy in the mail. Taylor does a great job with their marketing with this. It also enables us to keep 'close' to Bob Taylor himself with his Ask Bob column.

Heartily agreed.

I haven't gotten a new Wood & Steel in years.

I'm ok without it though.

The Growler 07-19-2019 07:46 PM

Okay. Am I the only one who noticed that when you look at the two pages of the models in the current line up there is only one Grand Symphony and that's the GS mini?

Say what? Maybe they are not available now while they convert them to V Class?

The GS is my favorite Taylor shape.

Further checking showed that the only Dread are the 110e and 110ce. As the Grand Pacific is often considered Dread-esque, I guess that makes sense, but still......

Growler,
Good catch ! In an AGF Marketplace post:

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=551907

Karl of the Chicago Music Exchange says " Taylor has currently discontinued the GS body shape to revamp for V-class bracing."

Interesting...

Thanks for that. I missed that comment as I try to stay out of the Marketplace to avoid the temptation. ;)

I had been mulling over 562 and 656 already, so I guess I might as well wait for the new 656. Then there's that cedar topped 552.... Argh. Bob! Stop it! :D
