Sexauer '22 & 11/12ths
 

In the past I have been quite pleased with my self for creating a new thread when the previous one hits 300 posts, and linking them back and forth nicely. Unfortunately (for my pride) the last one hit 300 earlier today while I wasn't looking.

For those of you new to my style or just not keeping up, I am just finishing my 326th acoustic guitar, an asymmetrical MultiScale JB-16 with an Adirondack top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. It is bound with ebony, and is just starting the finishing process this very day, 11/20/2022.

With only a little luck, I will be able to post some "dramatic" pictures tomorrow with some finish on it.

While probably no louder that a smaller guitar, there is an ease of power that a bigger guitar has which is quite compelling for me. I am not a big person, and many bigger guitars are simply ergonomically uncomfortable for me after not too many minutes. The JB-16 is designed intentionally to get around this stumbling block. So was the JB-15, but in the JB-16 it is more apparent that it works.

The asymmetry in combination with the 13 frets to the body moves the playing center of the to the player's right compared to most SJ type guitars, while the body wedge decreases "reach-over". This allows me to play the guitar comfortably for hours instead of minutes. Like virtually all of my guitars of the last 25 years, the JB-16 is relatively balanced across the entire spectrum of notes in both volume and the tonal envelope, especially compared to most large guitars i've played.

I cannot speak for the new one, of course, but I expect it to be in the same ballpark as the last one, the Ceylon Satinwood JB-16 I had with me at the Woodstock event. I am currently infatuated with the Ceylon, and added $10K to its likely price to avoid having someone buy it from me off the table. That worked, and I continue to play it while the latest glue-up is drying ever since. I wonder if the BRW JB-16 will be even better?

Beautiful work, Bruce. This design is brilliant, IMO, and solves so many different problems in one fell swoop. Can’t wait to see that back under finish!

Today I am going over to Tad's warehouse in Oakland for a meeting of the Northern California Association of Luthiers (NCAL). Part of our typical meeting is show and tell, and I will show my latest, the JB-CN which I completed yesterday. I built it to handle low tension as the strings are 24.5" x 25", and I wanted it to be as responsive and full as my more robust work, which I think it is. But SOOO easy on the left hand!

Hard to know who that will be. I have stopped taking commissions and am relying on folks to step up when they see something they like. I did have a fellow play play this one today and we have discussed price, though there has been no agreement as yet.

This particular guitar will be discounted due to my having broken one of the sides in bending. The repair is extremely difficult to discern, but the fact of it remains. I am offering it at a 40% discount to retail, which is a better deal than any dealer gets. Several people have played it, and the consensus is that it represents the pinnacle of my game in character and playability. I like it too.

Having had a chance to play this one a bit, I have to say it is a really sweet instrument. Well balanced, very beautiful tone, extremely playable when seated (even in a recliner, although designed for a couch!) and really great projection and volume, both for the player, and easily filling a large living room. What I particularly like is that it has all of the ergonomic advantages of one of Bruce’s larger builds, but in a very reasonable size - oddly, he didn’t mention the huge discount to me - hmmm -

I have barely mentioned it, but I am making a JB-15.5 for Cedar Rock Studio. I imagine it will be for sale there in 6 or 8 weeks. This may well be my final commissioned piece! It is Adirondack over MadRose, and is my last set of the now legendary MadRose LMIi obtained 25+ years ago as bass fingerboards and re-sawed into 4 piece guitar sets. This is, AFAIK, the wood that put MadRose on the map. It is certainly prettier than virtually any that came after it. IMO, of course.

Love that landscaped figure! Looks awesome and Alan is great to work with. Matt and Dustin do wonderful demos that really show off an instruments voice. Can't wait to hear it!
