Chuck Pyle

I’m late to the party (and not sure why), but recently discovered the late Chuck Pyle’s music—he’s right in my wheelhouse. Amazingly talented songwriter/guitarist. I’m gonna learn some of his stuff for sure! His guitar sound/style is elusive, and I’m gonna work some on that too (I rarely use Drop-D). Color me obsessed!

He was definitely a very talented performer and I always enjoyed his work.

If you like him, and haven't yet, check out Jack Williams. I always felt they had similar styles.;)

Back in the mid 90s I had just moved to Denver and wanted to check out some live music. There was a club a few blocks from where I was staying, so I went to check it out (don’t remember the name). Chuck was on stage doing his thing. Been a fan ever since. My favorite spin, which is mostly just him and his guitar, Is “Step BY Step” , his first Album.

His later stuff had more production on it and it was cool but that first CD shaped the way a play for years to come. It showed my what you can do without a pick

Oh yeah, now you guys are talking!!

I was sent some Chuck Pyle albums by a friend in the US some time ago, Lovely clean playing style and a beautiful voice.

Jack Williams is a joy! I opened for him, two or three times when he came to the UK.

If you look at that D35 he's playing it looks like it has a shaded top ! - nope, that's dirt!

The pick guard had come off years ago and for a while he replaced it with duct tape.

I remember turning up to a concert that I was to open and saw his d35 lying on the front row seats.

I once had a shade top D35, and his looked something like mine. I exclaimed to him "Oh you have a shade top!"
He gave me a funny look! He's really not interested in guitars. IIRC he uses really light gauge strings. Nice guy, very quiet, and humble.

Seems he's still gigging and traveling with his partner Judy.

He's made thirteen albums ! (I've only got five!)

Here's a nice vid:

My favorite recording of his is probably Across the Winterline - and this is my favorite tune from that - everything a great tune should be!;) The full album is on Youtube as well if memory serves.

My friend described Chuck Pyle as cowboy with jazz guitar. His guitar arrangements are intricate masterpieces. Everyone that ever saw him perform loved the guy.

I heard Jack Williams' Martin recently had to be put back together after getting run over. Jack can do anything on that guitar.

They've both played multiple times at house concerts in these parts.

I am not proud of my ignorance, but thanks to introducing me to these two fine artists. Really inspiring!
