Hatcher's Workshop '15

I've finished out my Hatcher's Workshop '14 thread and will now roll into the new year with the appropriate '15. I have a lot going on this year. I'm learning and working to set up a video/sound studio so that I can include sound clips on each or most of the guitars I make. Also, I am getting pretty far along settling into my new shop and would like to show more of the shop and what I do there. In fact I'd like to eventually try to give you a sense of the environment that I'm am working in and am inspired by.

Right now I have three guitars in process. I have my new parlor model which I will do a separate build thread on and I happen to have two BRW Josie small jumbo orders I'm working on. One will have the whole abalone treatment and has some great spider webbed grain. The other will be an all wood guitar. It has a nice quarter sawn BRW set with lots of red that I'm trying to capitalize on in the design. I'll start with some pictures of that:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/...ea71a9fb_c.jpg

We're going with Bloodwood for the binding and other accents. Bloodwood is very red and tends to stay red more than any other wood:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3940/...1b3409a0_c.jpg

This guitar is getting a very nice Adirondack top:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/...18e38b77_c.jpg

This guitar will be a short scale 24.75"
14 frets to the body
Full body small jumbo size 16" lower bout

Lot's more to come!
Mark

I wanted to steal the honor of being the first to post in Hatcher '15 since Hatcher '14 had over 17,000 views.

I will say Mr. Hatcher, that you sure seem to have a knack for finding beautiful wood to use as your template...That is gorgeous BRW.

Bruce Sexauer 01-27-2015 05:28 PM

Happy New Year, Mark. Lovely BRW!

Hatcher's Workshop '15

I look forward to another year of special Hatcher guitar builds! Glad your doing the video / recording with each guitar now Mark, as it does wonderful justice to your magnificent photography skills!

Can't beat 2014 in my book, Mark!

Jack42 01-27-2015 11:02 PM

That's some sweet looking BRW!

It's been my good fortune and pleasure to work with such great materials.

Thanks fountainhead, ukejon, and Jack42!

I'm starting off with a lot of very nice projects this year so check in often.

I'm interested to see what people's opinions are on the difference in looks between these two BRW Josie models.

Thanks,
Mark

CoolerKing 01-28-2015 05:34 AM

Ooooooh the others are right. That BRZ is killer.

Have you ever gone down the hide glue route? I'm a true believer.

Second BRW

The second BRW Josie I am working on in addition to the abalone I previously mentioned will have a cutaway. It will be 25.5" scale and have a Swiss "moon" master grade top. Here are a couple of pictures of this one:

I think the sides are particularly beautiful. This is what Ziricote wants to be when it grows up! :)

Abalone is going to go well on this, don't you think?

That is some fine set! Enjoy watching your progress.

Don't know for sure but I think that second set of BRW is why I ended up with your "Tree" Penelope. ;)

Sounds like 2015 is going to be exciting for you. Looking forward to our meeting in February.

Dennis, are going to bring that Penelope up with you?

Back to the first guitar:
I wanted to try something different with the back graft and since I think the best color to go with red is black (imo) I thought I'd go with a Gabon Black Ebony graft, and really bring it up to a high polish. I did my "H" logo in Bloodwood to keep the red theme going:

I wasn't going to as I'm figuring the weather to be very cold. And then of course there is taking the guitar on the plane.:eek: I could be convinced if a certain builder I know requested that I bring it.

Redpick 01-29-2015 03:01 PM

Always admire your style Mark, your build standards and photography are immaculate. Really enjoyed following the '14 thread.
The 1st BRW of this thread is unbelievable, the 2nd set is beyond that. I like to think of myself as preferring quarter sawn straight grain, then I see your 2nd set and that is about the best figured BRW that I've seen, and I've seen a few.
Are the two guitars for the same client? I like the contrast. Can't wait.

As much as I'd like to see that guitar again after it has had a chance to break in,
you have a point about the additional hassles involved. It's certainly not necessary.

Thanks Redpick,

The first guitar is for a repeat client but, the second is a first time buyer (from me). It's just a coincidence that I got two BRW Josie orders in a row. The guitars are different enough in both style and set-up that I thought they would make an interesting side by side build thread

Logo

On the Josie with the cut away I am using a regular spruce center seam graft.
I am also going with my more standard Koa "H" logo. Koa is just such a nice looking wood, I shouldn't refer to it as "standard":

Rosette

Here is the rosette forte all wood BRW/Adi guitar. The tiles are BRW, Bloodwood, and spalted Tamarind. It has a black ebony borders and a Bloodwood interior ring. The outer purfling is lines of black wood, maple, and Bloodwood. I'll use the same purfling around the top.

Thank-you for viewing!

TomB'sox 01-31-2015 09:47 AM

That is very very nice. I love the tie in with the bloodwood for the rosette and your "h" logo which is set to play off the red in the BRW back and sides. This all wood set up is going to be very eye catching and elegant at the same time letting the wood be the bling!

Beautiful choices Mr. Hatcher...
