Thomastik Infeld strings - how you mount them ?
Hi,
I have a set of Thomastik Infeld strings, spectrum bronze SB112, I wanted to install on my gibson J15. Theses strings have a ball end on one side (bridge) and about 15cm kind of silk wrapped around the other end (tuner side). For the 6th and 5th strings, the strings were long enough so these 15 cm where completely useless and I could fix the actual string (metallic without anything wrapped around it) inside the tuner. But for the 4th string, since the tuner is a bit further, I can only fix the silk-covered part inside the tuner. Is it the way theses strings are supposed to be installed? I would imagine so but i couldn't find or get any info from the supplier so far. In this case, shall I also fix the 6th and 5th using the silk-covered (which mean I would have to make few more turns around the tuner) ? Thanks a lot |
I install them the same as I do other strings and the silk lands where the silk lands.

ok, but out of curiosity, what is the purpose of this silk then?

From what I can gleen from their site, the silk ends help with tone. I noticed that my flat-wound bass strings have the same wrap on them. https://i.postimg.cc/rFQVDVSm/Gretsc...Flatwounds.jpg Even the ball ends have about 3/4 of silk wrap on the them too. https://i.postimg.cc/ZqF4hJK4/Gretsc...ik-Strings.jpgupload photos to the internet |
I grabbed a set of Thomastik Infelds once, but as soon as I turned the package over and saw the price tag, I mounted them right back on the display hanger!
(Sorry, couldn't resist). Y'all enjoy today and hopefully get some pickin' time in. :) |
I use TI Plectrums on all my guitars. They last forever and sound and play amazing.

They do have fancy silk wrap. My best guitar has them and they do last a long time. Nice Gretsch!

I think they use different coloured wrap on different gauges too.
I had an 'Extra-Light' 12-string set that had purple wraps, my regular set were red.... or something like that. |
I'm interested in this since I purchased a set of these and they are arriving today, can I use the Taylor way of stringing these or do you have to wind the whole string on each post then cut them off?
I really don't know, so some help would be appreciated. And I'm sorry if I took over the post. Lynn |

I use them on my Gibson L5 archtop. I change the strings about once a year - not because they start sounding dead, but because I'm thinking, "dang - these are getting old and I hope they don't break on a gig." |
TI are best known for their orchestral strings. On a violin-family string, the silk helps keep it wound tight. If you cut off the silk, it may start to unravel (I know from cutting down viola strings for student-sized instruments). I don't know if the same thing will happen on their guitar strings, but I would recommend that if you need to cut it, still leave a section of silk to anchor the wound material.
