Doerr Guitars new model Modified Dread build thread

Hello everyone, It's been awhile since I posted on the AGF. I've been busy in the shop making sawdust. I have gotten multiple orders for a Modified Dread so I'm about to start building the first one before I dig into the custom orders. If you're not familiar with the MD it is a model Ervin Somogyi has made famous in the lutherie world. It has all the benefits of the big sound of a Dread but with soften curves to look more aesthetically pleasing. I did get Ervins ok to do this model as long as I drew it up myself. Here is what I drew up.

I'm going to build it out of Brazilian back and sides with a Swiss spruce top. Haven't decided whether to do it in my Standard or Signature Series. I'm leaning towards my Signature. I would like to see what the MD looks with my beveled binding and other Signature features. I'm definitely having the Ryan-Style beveled armrest. That will certainly add comfort to a big guitar. Here are the woods I am using.

All last week I made all the molds for the MD. I made the molds for double sides, laminated linings, and the main female mold for building.

Tonally I am going for the big bass that Dreads are know for but with keeping in tack not losing the mids and having nice meaty trebles.

I am looking forward to building this MD and to put my touch on it. This guitar will be available so if anyone is interested please reach out. Thanks for looking! Tom

Wow, that is going to be great. The BRW is particularly stunning. Really is lovely.

Go for it, Tom!! :)
Glorious start to this new model...wonderful!! Hope to follow along if you continue to post on this build. (hope so!).
By the way......maybe you could post pics and story on the ukulele you've just completed?? I'll bet AGF would love it too!!
Be well,
Fred

I have always admired Doerr guitars - the aesthetic and the finish are always on point!

A mod dread is definitely a natural progression for your fingerstyle fans.

Would love to try one some day...

I will be following this for sure, it will help me decide on either a Solace or your new Mod D for my build next year.

There will definitely be a visit when this one is done!:evilgrin:

Hey Fred, I'm glad you saw that on Facebook. I really enjoyed building that for my wife.

I was hoping you would see this thread. It will be interesting to compare the two once I'm done. I'm guessing the MD will have a bigger bass and overall rumble to it compared to the Solace. The Solace has a nice responsiveness to it but with a nice deep voice. So we shall see what the little differences will be.

Tom, I’m excited to see this. A mod D with your aesthetic touches is going to be beautiful! Hmm...would love to see one in a redwood top!

Well Mike I have a custom build coming up soon which happens to be a MD that has some of the best Redwood I've ever laid my hands on. The Redwood grain count is 72lines per inch! I've never seen anything as fine grained as this particular Redwood. So I'm looking forward to that build! Keep your eyes out because I plan on doing a build thread on it. It will also have a twin built along with it that has the best Adirondack spruce I have ever seen. Not to mention the incredible Brazilian going on both guitars built in my Sterling Series. It should be fun:)

Looking forward to seeing what we end up with :D

Tom's designs have always been so elegant with his micro pearl and beveled bindings. I can't wait to see what the actual guitar looks like as drawings never do his guitars justice. My vote goes for a Signature Series!

Heeee's Baaack...

Looking like a really fine build. Can't wait to see.
