NGD: 2021 Epiphone Les Paul '59 Standard

I picked up a 2021 Epiphone Les Paul '59 Standard off of Craigslist last weekend. Like new except it was $300 less than new (and minus sales tax). I had to get it!

I had a '75 LP Standard for 25 years. The urge to replace it comes up now and then. Refusing to pay the Gibson price I shopped the Epis and even owned a couple but nothing struck me to make me keep one.

This one looked great on paper, so I tried this one out and I liked the sound. Getting it home and plugging it in, I really like the sound... and feel of this guitar.

Yes, the case is part of the whole package with this Epiphone.

Beautiful guitar, enjoy!

I have one of these as well and I agree it is a phenomenal guitar. You got one heck of a great deal on that! I think I paid right at $800 for mine new and I still thought it was a good deal versus the $1800+ for a Gibson.

I've read your post from earlier this year. Congrats to you! I just got done playing it... $500 well spent, even though I'm an acoustic person it is worth every penny. Sounds so good.

Thanks for the other nice words folks!

I really regret selling my Epi LP to fund my hollow body Ibanez. Enjoy your Epi.

Dave - Congrats! That's one of Epiphones top of the line Les Pauls. Gibson Burstbucker pickups too.

Why did you sell the '75 LP Standard? Was it for funds or you just weren't interested in the LP anymore?

Yes, BB2 and BB3 pickups, CTS, Switchcraft, Mallory 150 polyester film caps. Sounds great. Volume and tone taper smoothly and correctly.

Bought the '75 LP in 1977 and sold it in 2003, so it was 26 years of ownership. I used the funds to buy a custom Weber mandolin a few months later as I was getting into a more serious acoustic situation. Always being more an acoustic player, I figured it was a good move. I've always looked at a possible replacement. I don't like the Gibson headstock angle.. too steep. I prefer the frets over top of the binding, not up to the binding (the '75 LP had been refretted when I bought it in '77 so the frets were over the binding). Everything comes together with the Epiphone. Very happy! Here's a pic of the 1975 LP Standard I owned..

Wow - love the Gibson! Are those DiMarzio pickups?

I believe they are! A couple more pics. The closer one shows the refret with the fret over/on top of the binding, which makes way more sense to me.

as a lover of Les Pauls all I can add is "Nice Axe! Killer deal! Well done!"

Ps: I really like that case too.

What is the neck like on the Epi 59 Standard? I became interested in these last year. I finally got up the nerve to go to GC last week and of course, they didn't have any.

I've never owned an electric and the only neck I've played in the Martin MLO. What is the Epi 59 neck like compared to what Martin is selling these days?

I ask because it seems like every Youtube video describes it in a different way, from chunky to big shoulders, to any other way.

BoneDigger 06-24-2021 04:23 PM

It's a fairly thick neck. Not wide, but thick. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it would be thicker than a Martin MLO neck.
