New Cervantes Crossover!

I have never been so pleased with a new guitar in my life. I heard nothing but rave reviews about these guitars. They are excellent. I received mine today. It arrived 1 day early, just in perfect time for this new forum section.
These sond just as good if not better than the Goodall Crossovers. I would say the only difference is that these sound like true classicals and the Goodalls more of those Goodall overtones.
The Cervantes is lattice braced, so it has a very lively refined voice blended with that romantic spanish tone. The tonal pallette and colors are numerous.

I went with Palo Escrito/Cedar. The bass is thunderous, the mids are sweet, and the trebles smooth. THe woods and constuction is top notch with a beautiful french polish to show off the highly figured woods. I normally go for indian rosewood, but I like to be different. The Palo Escrito looks better and gives the same tone as indian rosewood but without the scooped mids.

I really don't expect these to keep going for such a low price. It truly does sound, look, and play like a $5000+ small builder instrument.

Anyone looking for a great crossover need look no further. Try one, you won't regret it. Good luck finding one. They sell like hotcakes.

All it needs now is a pickup and I would love to have a soundport added.

Anyone care to help me out and post some pics for me?

feel free to send me pics... i'll post em

congrats!
as i have said elsewhere... category killer. did you get it at 12th fret?

there are many pickup options out there and strong opinions. alejandro put a K&K system in mine and i'm so far very pleased. alejandro could also do the work to put a port in it, i'm pretty sure.

Wow. That was fast. Thanks again. I really love the look of the ebony tuning buttons. They compliment the woods very well. I am thinking about a Hylander or maybe just spend the extra $ for a Shertler Dyn-G ? I need something not too prone to feedback.

Very nice guitar Toni, what are the major differences between a Crossovers and standard Classical?

Play2PraiseHim 03-24-2010 04:55 PM

THe fretboard is radiused with a narrower nut width. Crossovers also usually have a cutaway. The factory builds usually have electronics and small builders usually leave that up to the buyer.

Toni,

what is your sense for its weight? I played a Coco Cervantes crossover and it seemed a bit heavy to me. The one I played was lattice braced and I believe that plus the cocobolo accounted for the weight. Thanks.

When talking with several of the retailers about these guitars, they suggested to go with either Indian Rosewood or Palo Escrito. They told me that I could spend more for the Cocobolo but that it was a really dense wood resulting in more weight & slightly brighter trebles than the tone I was after. But I must admit, the Cocobolo models sure are beautiful.

I guess it is all a matter of personal taste. But for me the Palo Escrito does not seem too heavy. I love the look and tone. The added mids that are missing from Indian Rosewood are great. The bass notes have that wow factor. The trebles seem to have added punch.

Cocobolo & Palo Escrito are both Mexican Rosewoods, but Palo Escrito is more plentiful and easier to work with so the P.E. models are the least expensive of the 3. I have noticed that Goodall seems to favor Palo Escrito for his crossovers.

Gorgeous guitar Toni. I like Gryphon Stringed Instruments too. I've purchased several guitars from them over the years. We're very lucky to have such a great shop in the area.

Enjoy your new guitar...it's a beauty for sure.

Very nice guitar!!!! How would you compare size wise to the Taylor Nylon....more to the 72 or 74 for size?

Play2PraiseHim 03-25-2010 07:26 AM

Closer to the GC size. Actually the Taylors are deeper and more wide. Cevantes is 14 1/4 " wide. Taylors are 15" & 16" wide Thanks for all the kind words. After owning 6 other classical/crossovers, this one trumps them all. It looks & plays just a good as the Taylor NS64ce that I owned but with better tone.

I 99% certain that I am going with the Highlander UST. Can anyone recommend a good tech in the Delaware/Baltimore/Philly/DC area?
