That backstrip is rad.

Keep the pictures coming. I was very close to picking that set of wood, now I am wishing I would have :D. It is looking awesome with the backstrip.

Howard's marquetry is beautiful!

I'm so drooling and following along faithfully with this one.

Here's a shot of the completed backstrip. Thanks to John for taking the time to take photos!

Very cool--love that backstrip with the RW. Congrats!

Howard is a talented chap. That backstrip is awesome.

John was SCUBA diving off the coast of Maine in the mid 90s and, by crazy and freakish coincidence, discovered a wrecked ship that had been lost to history for 150 years. It was carrying a load from none other than CF Martin himself back to his European homeland. A load of Red spruce. John hired an excavation team to salvage the red spruce billets and has been drying them carefully ever since. The so called "Shipwreck spruce" is being used for the top of this OM. He also found some abalone during the same dive. And now it's in my rosette.

Like everyone else, I just LOVE that pretty strip for the back. This guitar is very simply and yet elegantly appointed. A beauty!
|
Very cool Juston! I'm sure some of you know I'm an avid diver as well.

On a serious note, I'm quite jealous of your back strip. |

Beautiful top and rosette...
I suspect the doomed historic ship was commanded by Captain John Griffin and abalone was harvested from the salty deep by John's famed dive buddy Joanne Thompkins. Let's hope that the ship sank and the abalone was harvested under a "full moon"...:) |

I am off SCUBA diving later this week. I will keep my eyes open for "shipwreck" woods instead of the boring critters that I am normally distract me..:)

More progress all around. Many thanks again to John for taking the time to take photos. It's fun for all of us!

And a few more . . . not the sexiest pictures, but sort of nuts and bolts.

Looking great. I still don't get why they don't just put some bricks on it to glue the braces on.
|
Some of that fantastic style 34 binding on the completed box. And a look at one of the highest precision miters I think I've ever seen. John tells me he re-sharpens his chisel 4 or 5 times for the miters of a single end graft. I had no idea!

Holy moly that top purfling (and the whole build that is) is out of this world. Did John already have some or did you source it elsewhere? I'm loving this build! Can't wait to see it come to fruition!

This looks great, Juston - can't wait to see the finished product.
That back is so straight grained - nuts! |

Bound for greatness! I think the fossilized unicorn horn was a great choice.

Absurd...probably my favorite aesthetic circa in recent memory. Think Howard has any purfling left he'd be interested in unloading :)
|
Beautiful work! Bi love the mite red side joints
