Am I crazy to get a 000-18 when I have a D-18?
 

I know they are very different guitars due to body construction but they come from the same family. I’ve been looking for a smaller body Martin and tried a few rosewood models which were all very nice. My ears keep coming back to the sweet woody tone of mahogany though. Just wondering if I’m shortchanging myself on variety if I have a D-18 and a 000-18.

I think they’re different enough in size, tonal profile and scale length to warrant both. The 000 will have a more prominent and succulent midrange, it’s a sweet guitar.

This spring I tried out about 150 different guitars in three cities in an effort to self educate my ears while at the same time finding the right guitar. I won't mention brands but there are tons of good guitars out there from builders I`d never considered. Go try out a bunch and leave your preconceptions out of it. If you're lucky enough to find one that speaks to you well then...

No, you are not. I had a D-18, but tired of the size. I ended up snagging a 000-18 and instantly fell in love! The size, the playability, and the TONE! It has beaten all comers for the last few years. The only one to beat it was the 000-18 authentic.

Super versatile and a joy to play.

Are you comfortable with the shorter scale of a 000? If not, try an OM18 or if you're still willing to explore rosewood, an OM21.

If you record strummy stuff, you'll be glad you have another choice besides your Martin Dread.

If your D-18 had a love child with a 000-18 it would be a Martin J-18 - hard to find but they do exist.

Totally different guitar. Ive had one of Martin's dreads and then got a 00018 so I speak from experience. I would never go back to a dread now. You can have both of course.

No, not crazy.

At some point, you may long for a tone that is significantly different (though you may not....only time will tell). Meanwhile, you can enjoy the noticeable but more subtle difference between the two you mentioned.
