I always get so excited to see new Dion posts, totally falling in love with Lapacho as well! A quick google search reveals it's also known as the 'pink trumpet tree' which only serves to make it more charming. Congrats!

This is Dion Guitars #33. There's fortune/backstory that makes that a significant draw of a number for the commission-er, the current of karmic feedback loops we wander unwittingly through ~

Story lands somewhere between The One That Got Away and Guided By Voices ca 1992 handmade Propeller edition 33/500.

Like everything re Dion's kits, it's a very intentional aesthetic and signature of process. It also establishes a root note of subtlety - there's not a lot of aperture to peer in the soundbox once it's boxed, you know, so it almost re-surprises and rewards future attention - once this is made-up and a "guitar". A focal point hiding in plain sight. I'm now realizing how it's almost like a painter/iconographer preparing the canvas.

Perhaps I overthink it.

Re structured sides, it's one of the keys that unlock how Dion's kits sound distinct from other luthiers - and enables the hollow-core back approach to work its magic (and the Dion guitar's unparalleled capacity for volume). His webpage explains it a little, and there's some explanation here on AGF and his insta (again) as well - and perhaps the maker himself might catch this thread and surf by to elaborate.
