Remembering Doug Sahm

I just saw this great documentary on Amazon;

''Sir Doug & the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove''

I got the ''Doug Sahm and the Band'' in the $2 rack, it had been a failure with three songs that I liked, but it had Dylan, Bromberg and Dr. John. It should have been better. I didn't know why they were playing with this guy. I didn't make the connection to the Sir Douglas Quartet until many years later when I looked up Doug Sahm on the internet.

This show tells Doug's whole story and it's a groove. Doug was an original, I loved learning more about him.

I was / am a Doug Sahm fan, but IMHO "Doug Sahm and His Band" was, far and away, his best work. Deliscously loose and limber, full of the joy of people making music together. Not a weak track on the album!

Thanks for the insight on the documentary! I'll check it out for sure.

Doug Sahm was so good. How many guys START on the pedal steel?

Love SDQ but just as much LOVED the Texas Tornados.

Here's a SDQ by TT :)

Maybe because you're putting in the entire address? I'm not sure, but here are the directions...

Exactly what I was doing. Thanks for the link & how-to

Now the guitar-playing of Doug Sahm and spectacular keys of Augie Meyers (MASTER of the groove)

Me too. Pretty obscure record, but great R&B Doug and I liked his R&B stuff more than his more Texas'y stuff. And I liked that a lot too. I saw him twice around the Hell of a Spell time. Once in a tiny little room in Tucson at the University of Arizona in about 1979 or 1980 with the T-birds opening up for him - both Doug and Jimmie Vaughan blew my mind that night. I saw Doug wandering around the halls looking for bathroom after his set and talked to him for a few minutes. Seemed like a hell of a nice guy. And then I saw him again in late 1981 in this huge club in London. He was great both times...

Check out his sons, Shandon and Shawn. Keeping the Sahm sound alive!

At the end of the Amazon documentary, they show shawn leading the Texas Tornadoes. Shandon was in the show talking about his father but they never showed him playing, is he in the Texas Tornadoes? What does he play?
