Helo, wanting to set up electric guitar pedals. Need advice.. Thanks!
 

I'm pretty much an acoustic guy, but it's time I work on some electric leads. I have 4 pedals. Is there a "best practice" when putting them in line?

I have a Nano Big Muff, MXR Carbon Copy, MXR Analog Chorus and TC Helicon Hyper Gravity Compressor pedal. Does it make a difference which pedal is at the start of the chain? Any input/direction would be greatly appreciated. I'll be playing through a Mesa Boogie Nomad 55 tube amp. Thanks in advance for your input!!!

Compressor OD delay chorus.
Chorus in the Fx loop if it has one.

People have different ideas, depending on the sound they want. Try experimenting a bit.

Some put the compressor after OD/distortion/fuzz. Give it a try. Delays and modulations after those, and often in the effects loop, unless you are looking for more unusual sounds.

What do I do? I put a cable between guitar and amp, and go. Sometimes maybe overdrive or boost in there.

However you do it, it's an axiom to always put the compressor first in the chain. All of these FX generate a bit of noise and you definitely don't want the cumulative noise compressed. Next, OD for the same reason...otherwise you will boost noise.

The other two can go either way, depending on how they sound to you, but the idea of placing the chorus in an FX loop if you have one makes sense.

Also, use the shortest possible cable runs between them, or direct connectors. It's all about keeping your signal chain as quiet as possible.

+1! You've gotten great advice in the thread on the conventional wisdom, but be sure to experiment with the pedal order in your chain. Everyone's tonal preference and situation are different.

Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) is an example of a famous "fuzz" player who places compression after OD/distortion/fuzz.
