song suggestion please
I don't post much. I am a 63 yo guy who started playing guitar 8 years ago. I have basic cowboy chords under control and a bit of finger-style.
This summer is my 40th wedding anniversary. I want to surprise my wife by playing and singing some songs that (sort of) tell our story. I have been working with a voice teacher so I hope I can manage these few basic songs. Here is what I have so far... I Gotta Get Drunk - Willie Good Hearted Woman - Willie / Waylon Danny's Song - Kenny Loggins This sort of tells about my stupid younger years and how this woman changed my life. What I am looking for is one or two songs that celebrate the victory that is 40 years of marriage and she is still my best friend. Please keep in mind my skill level. (BTW - I have never played / sang in front of people and there will be 40-50 family / friends at this party in July.) |
Forever and Ever, Amen by Randy Travis. May have 4 chords in it. It really speaks to loving someone over the long haul. Congrats on your 40 years and very cool that you are doing this.
Best, Jayne |
Remember When - Alan Jackson
Four chords, easy to play and sing. If you can get through it without bawling your own eyes out. |
If you can get through it without bawling your own eyes out.
Yeah, that may be an issue.. |
I Can't Help Falling In Love With You is one that is sentimental, sweet and loving. Your wife would appreciate your public acknowledgment of you falling in love with her over and over again.
It does take a simple arpeggio finger picking pattern with your right hand. Finger picking sounds better than strumming on this song. More intimate. Congratulations on your happy marriage! Good luck in your performance. Simple done well is better than complex done "meh". |
And I love Her by the Beatles.
Congrats on the 40 years! My wife and I just past 25. Blessed be. |
Only you can pick the songs that tell your story, but congratulations on taking voice lessons. Keep it up. It's not going to change your voice. Your voice is your voice but you'll get confidence and you'll learn to sing on key. And it's fun.
Congratulations also on your 40th anniversary!! |
Her name doesn't happen to be Amanda does it? If so, then Waylon Jennings has you covered. You could personalize it if there are three syllables in her name.

A logical choice is one of my favorites "You're My Best Friend", by Don Williams. Singable, easy (I play it in C), and it says it all.
|
Says it all with 3 chords..
|
Alan Jackson performed a good one, "I'd Love You All Over Again"
|
“If I Needed You” recorded by Don Williams. 3 chords and you can strum it.

A simple, but great song is Townes van Zandt's "If I needed you." All you have to do is get that Townes rhythm down. |
Forever and ever amen and remember when
Congrats on 40 years!! |
If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell. He actually says "maybe we'll get 40 years together" in the lyrics.
