Machado gets $300M contract (MLB)

Manny Machado is one of the two big names on the MLB free agent market, the other being Bryce Harper. Machado got a $300 M contract with the Padres. Glad he's not going to the Yankees.

At what point will contracts become too large? It's one thing to sign a mega contract but it's another to perform - it's a guaranteed contract regardless of performance. What's your opinion?

My opinion?? Me, I would play one season, get "injured"...take the money and retire to the palm trees.....done....:D Show me the money!!!

Great player, not the best locker room presence for all the young Padres prospects.

Pro sports are done. These insane mega contracts tied to the market annuities is a death knell. Guns for hire...sad and wasteful .;)

People were saying that same thing decades ago. I know, I've been around for many decades. ;)

As long as money IN is greater than money OUT, (My total knowledge of accounting), the pro leagues will do pretty much as they want! Even college teams, the minor leagues for the pros, have joined the head long dive for dollars. Once in a while I read where the pros are actually messing around with promising high school players.

I have no affiliation with any team and watch for entertainment only!

WAY too much to spend on a dude that would rather blow a bubble than trying to beat out a throw in a World Series:

I'm very happy for him and ecstatic that the Yankee's didn't get stuck with that monster contract.
:D

I should have said, "I'm done with pro sports".....those decades are flying by;)

The guy is a genius...gets to spend half the season in beautiful San Diego--and he gets Octobers off!

Guessing the contract effectively takes him out of our used guitar market. Looking forward to seeing him in the National League - even though SD isn't my team.

I don't know which is worse. Large sports contracts or 'golden parachutes' for CEO's of bankrupt companies. :)

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the compensation some of these athletes receive.

I think the teams figure out the ROI, return on investment, exceeds the amount they pay. To me, it is very hard to believe that by spending 300 million for one player that they recoup 300 million in revenue or more to make gross receipts exceed expenses. Mind boggling for sure

Guaranteed regardless of performance - I think that's a terrible terrible concept, whatever the job.

I have no objection to the amount though. The Pods presumably ran the numbers & were happy with the results.
