Best Plexi clone?
 

I have a few I'm looking at, don't really want to spend more than 5k.

Suggestions?

It does have flexibility to reduce power and even use different power tubes.

A 20-pound. all-tube Plexi head :eek: - someone's gotta start importing those here...

Are we talking 100 watts of thunder, or are you flexible on power?

Low power, I'd go with the Suhr PT15ir. Reactive load built in and really nice cab simulation. 3 channels and you can get into Plexi-land. But it is way more flexible than a plexi clone.

The Suhr SL 68 is a 100 watt plexi type amp and the SL67 is a 50 watter.

All of them are half your budget. Well about...

The title of this videos is "PLAY A PLEXI 16 guitarists play a Marshall ON 10! GuitCon 2017" The hilarious thing is all these pros who have NEVER dimmed a Marshall. You'd think they would have at some point.

Buddy's dad ran a car detail outfit and the garage was a ten bay thing. We would set up in one part of it on the weekend and make some noise. We decided to go all out, set up all the band equipment, spot monitors and the PA facing in at the guys. Two folded W horns with 18"s, two, two 12" horn loaded mids, horn high end, triamped, basically a 200 person gig system with everything mic'ed up. Cousin plugs into his Twin, stands in the center of it and hits a power chord. I never saw a bigger grin on his face. There was no real direction where the sound was coming from, forget wall of sound, he was in the center of it.

The thing about the vid is not just because it is loud but it is a small space. The pressure effect of the speakers low end is greater, sort of like the sound inside a car with a big system.

Which Plexi? JTM45? 1959? 18 Watt? 1987? My favorite of the bunch is the 1987.

Buddy of mine got hold of one about 40 years ago - set it up in his backyard...

At SPL's where a 100-watter would be getting into the tone zone, this baby wasn't even breathing hard...

Have you considered a Friedman? The Smallbox is a little different than a plexi but many have raved about it. Same with the Dirty Shirley. They can give more gain than the Plexi too.

Personal opinion. Anything in the Ballpark is good. The plexi sound most of us love or even know is a recorded sound. Using tube compression, massive plate reverb, very possibly tube mics, and analog tape (more compression?).

Even a "real" plexi might not be the exact sound in your head.

WOW! Congrats. I just looked it up. Do you have EL34, 6L6, or KT66?
