Russel Crosby- Multi-Scale Build

I have been down the baritone rabbit hole for a few years now, having bought and sold quite a few in that time. A couple were pretty darn close to what I was looking for, like the Kingslight baritone I sold a few months ago. However, there were things about each I trued that persuaded me that I should keep looking. You know how that goes. Perhaps that is the prime symptom of G.A.S. Then I just missed out on a Lowden that I thought would be right up my alley. So, I finally decided to commission a build. I considered a few different luthiers but so many were beyond my financial wherewithal. Then I got to know Russel Crosby from the woods of Nova Scotia. We began planning back in October. The idea was to build a multi-scale version of his FS model with a spruce top and Walnut back and sides. I kept thinking this will probably be my only shot at a custom baritone, so I decide to go all-in and found some really nice and reasonably priced Koa. Other specs include a cutaway, beveled armrest and a Manzer wedge. The neck is Walnut and the top is AAA Lutz. Russel is such a consummate artist and luthier and I think the results thus far bear that out.

That is a beautiful set for the back!!!!

That will be a very nice guitar. What will the scale length be?

Agreed. I bought that from Steve at Hawian Hardwoods Direct. He has quite a bit of older growth Koa. Great guy to deal with. I bought another set for a guitar that Brook Guitars is building for me. In fact, I borrowed some ideas from your latest Taran build... But that is for another thread:D

Beautiful axe

Lovely Koa, and the entire axe is PRETTY!

You will love the bevel and Wedge. I am so glad they can be had!

Have FUN with this big bad boy.

Yes, once you've had a beveled armrest, it is kind of hard to go with on out on larger guitars. However, this will be my first Manzer wedge.

And yes, you heard right Todd, although it was muffled a bit by all this “freakin’” SNOW!!!

Looks great, and that bevel is something else. Did he use veneers to get that effect?

I am pretty sure he used pieces from the top, back and neck wood, that was the plan anyway. I will ask him next time I talk to him.

Very cool my friend - maybe after I get my second shot in my system I'll make a day trip up there...;)

That's a spectacular looking guitar and it's good to hear your comments about Russel Crosby 'cause I've got one on order with him. After reading many comments about his builds but never playing one, I decided to take the plunge. Will be a few months yet for me.

Russel has really stepped it up here, James...he's always done good work but this looks spectacular. Love the birds (another passion of Russel's) and their little toes! Glad you took the plunge and I hope it's everything your heart has desired...

Last week the “Crane” Landed.
It took well over a week to get this guitar out of Canada to my doorstep with a few custom snafus, but NGD final did arrive.
You can take a look at the pictures below, but they don’t do this beautiful instrument justice. I can think of only two other guitars I have had made, purchased or received via trade that have blown me away as much as this Custom FS Elite from Russel Crosby managed to do upon one the case and initial playing. Sonically rich, So easy to play, aesthetically gorgeous and a form that oozes a master quality build. This guitar exceeds my expectations on every level. I tip my hat to Russel Crosby. He may fly under the radar, but his guitars absolutely soar. A big thanks to Philjs for introducing me to his work.

I couldn’t agree more. It is absolutely everything I had hoped for:D:D
Russel is a super person in every sense ... he is also a great bird photographer as well.

Looks beautiful, congratulations. Out of curiosity, what kind of customs snafus did you have to deal with?

Basically the guitar got delayed at Canadian Customs. After contacting Russel they were satisfied, however it took several days for that to occur. I had run into a similar problem sending a microphone to Canada a few weeks prior to this. I think it is just the state of world right now. I really thought using FedEx would avoid border issues, that just wasn’t the case.

colins 04-26-2021 02:53 AM

It's a treat for the eyes, and no doubt for the ears as well. Congratulations!

Man, there's nothing like a nice piece of koa. Beautiful guitar. +1 on the gorgeousness of that wedge...probably my favorite part of the whole guitar, just from a visual aesthetic point of view. But now I want to hear it!
