AGF Showcase of Talent, July 2014: Songs of the 60s!
The July Showcase of Talent is upon us! By a vote of AGF, this month we will be focusing on songs from the 60s. You can choose from rock, country, bluegrass, blues, etc. Any style of acoustic play is fine and you can have some accompaniment, but it should focus on the acoustic guitar in some way. Remakes of earlier decades is fine if the remake is discernible from the original.
This is not a competition. Every person who submits a song via video or link will be placed in a drawing for a $50 gift card. Strumming, finger picking, flat picking, flamenco, or just about any other type of playing is just fine. Make it your own! Instrumental or singing is fine too. Heck, there are no real rules. Lets hear some great acoustic music! Here is a place to start: http://www.nme.com/list/100-best-son.../263950/page/1 or http://tasteofcountry.com/10-best-60s-songs/ Todd |
"Bus Stop" written by the Hollies
The CSNY formative groups (Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Hollies) were some of my favorite groups to do songs by back in my rock and folk days in the '60s.
I recorded this a while back playing a D-28, a Seagull 12 string, Fender bass, all vocals & instruments are me, except that I used a Alesis drum machine. Bus Stop :D ( It's funny when I have occasion to perform some songs from the '60s live nowadays. I'll usually introduce them by saying "You know, the embarrassing thing is I learned this song when it was new and on the Top 40..." ) |

Excellent, Dave!
Great tone. Analog recording? Bill |
Thanks Gents!
Bill, that was recorded on a Tascam DP-01FX/CD Digital 8 track. Dave |
In 1965, The Beatles released the "Rubber Soul" album and one of the tracks that became a hit was "I've Just Seen A Face." Here is our somewhat folky/bluegrass rendition of that classic: I've Just Seen A Face

Bob & Willie! Excellent! I KNEW the '60s would bring out some great stuff!!!
Bob, Really nice rendition conceptually and execution wise! Have you ever heard "Beatles Country"? It was a 1965 LP by a bluegrass band doing Beatles tunes. Willie, I'd have never thought to tackle that one solo, but I'm sure glad you did. Great job! |
Here's a 60s song (covered in the 70s) at an open mic (hence the very loud bar noise).

Nice job, Mike!

Hi folks - from 1969 the beautiful song "He ain't heavy, he is my brother" by "The Hollies". The lyrics are as touching as the song. Here is my instrumental version.
Hope you enjoy it, arranged by Martin Tallstrom. |
