Tom Doerr Modified Dreadnought Build Thread
I'm excited, I got on Tom's build list and he started building me another Doerr Mod D. I've owned several Doerr guitars over the years including two new ones that I bought from Tom. I'm a huge fan of his work and I believe he's one of those builders that really puts together everything you'd want in a guitar into a total package. They are always incredible sounding instruments but they also look and play great too and the tone and responsiveness of his guitars is on par with the best Somogyi, Olson, Traugott, Kim Walker guitars I've played.

The first Mod D I bought from Tom was a very expensive and beautiful Brazilian Rosewood Swiss spruce Signature model, in fact it was the first Modified Dreadnought he had built. I've been able to compare with several instruments costing twice the money from a lot of different Somogyi Apprentices and its held its own very very well!! Several people I know that played that guitar went on to order one for themselves.

This time I wanted to keep things a bit more simple and order a guitar I wasn't afraid to play out and use heavily. I ordered kind of a base Standard model (if is there is such a thing from Tom?). I ordered it in Kevin Ryan's favorite wood combination of Western Red Cedar and Indian rosewood. I also ordered it with a bevel and cutaway and with a K&K Pure Mini pickup system.

Tom started building it last week and sent me some photos. I'm going to work towards posing them on this thread soon here.

Happy for you - one of these days Tom and I are going to create a fine instrument together. Until then it's living vicariously through his customers here.

I'm way past due for a visit - been extremely busy at the studio, so I need to get out there soon.

Congrats, Bobby!! Heard from Charlie D. yesterday that this was in the works for you! Exciting!
Beautiful tone wood......this should be a stellar guitar. Say "hi" to Tom for me! :)

Jackpot!!! My review and video posts are forthcoming on the Doerr MD I bought recently from Tom. Couldn't be happier with cedar as a top wood.

Have fun with this one!!!

Congrats! I have a Doerr coming to me this year, so I am interested to see more of his builds. Very nice cedar.

Awesome looking woods, Bobby--looking forward to seeing this one come together!

Congrats Bobby!

I remember watching your video demo of Tomís first MD in Braz and fell in love with both your playing and his Modified Dread. I hope you will be mighty pleased w this one when itís done. Cedar in a big body should sound really wonderful.

Great looking work, "In the White" I like everything about guitar building up to this stage. Everything after this is mostly one big PITA. Hopefully not for everyone

I can practically hear the bass just looking at it...

Exceptionally clean work from Tom as usual! Congrats Bobby this looks like it will be phenomenal!

mikealpine 04-02-2021 08:22 AM

Classy, as Tomís work always is.

Ukulele_Eddie 04-02-2021 09:38 AM

Tom's work is amazing. So clean, so precise. And beautiful. Look forward to hearing this, as I do with any Doerr.

Very cool! Would also love to hear clips. I like the idea of a modified DN with a cutaway as an all around guitar. I was also interested in EIR or something since I already have 2 Brazilian rosewood acoustics, which are killer, but not something I'm always comfortable lugging around.

Also, do these use the same case as a regular dreadnought?

SuperB23 06-11-2021 08:46 AM

Guitar came back from finish last week and Tom is gluing the bridge on. I'm excited to likely be getting it within a few weeks here! I've been playing my Swiss Brazilian 2019 Doerr Mod D quite a bit lately, what a guitar!!!!!!!

Man that looks schweeet!
