Jamie’s Bog Oak/LS OM final pictures

The major players in this OM guitar are solid black Bog Oak and a really striking Luck Strike redwood top.

The top has such pronounced silking that it’s better described as having micro curl. Incredible tap tone. Bell like.

The back is black with typical well quartered oak markings. Very dense.

The sides are likewise black.

We could use bog oak for the fingerboard as well.

Great combo you’ve got there!

How does bog oak compare to regular oak?

It’s a little harder than regular oak. That’s probably due to all the mineral deposits that also darkened the color.

Oooohhhhh....

Boggy/LS!!!

Jamie is in for a treat. I am ready for more. John has been sadly absent here lately. But I expect that will change soon...

Love the contrast between the top and back, plus the movement going on within the woods. I'm going to enjoy watching this develop!

Very interesting wood combination. Looking schweet! :)

Richard Mott 06-14-2021 05:30 AM

Yes! This wood combination is intriguing, very much in line with what is said about redwood.

Hard to beat black and red(ish). I need to think what to do about the binding and such. I always ask myself “what would Mark do”. There might be amboyna burl involved.

I am so excited that this build is finally happening. Thanks everyone for following!

Regarding "what would Mark do", that Desert Ironwood burl he has been using is pretty great, isn't it?

Guitars44me 06-14-2021 08:36 AM

Yes!!!

I’ve got desert ironwood for fingerboards but no burl.
I’m thinking the amboyna burl would be a better color match for what’s going on. Maybe

Having held, seen, tapped, heard and swooned over both these sets of wood first hand, I can only say congratulations to Jamie, this build will be nothing short of spectacular.

Nemoman 06-14-2021 03:28 PM

This is going to be one cool guitar--I look forward to watching it develop!

I've never seen (much less played) a guitar with oak back and sides. What kind of tone does it help to produce?
