Play to loud with a pick ! play to soft with fingertips problem !
 

Reading some other threads and not wanting to hijack a thread, i am gonna start a new one ! :D

Reminded me of a problem since I live in an apartment setting.

My neighbors love my gibson guitars and love me playing bare fingerstyle ! :D

But darn it all the cops would be at the door when the Martins were playing :D

Well gosh darn you need to get out of your cave and let go with the pick every once in a while !

I am sure you home people can totally not relate to this problem !

Hang sound baffles on your interior walls.
1) Fasten batt insulation to cheap paneling and lean them against your wall
2) Mount a drapery rod and hang a cheap quilt floor to ceiling.
3) Same as #1 except use foam rubber scrounged from discarded couche or chair cussions. Or buy some at a fabric store. Or glue the panels with rigid foam insulation (any building supply store).

Depending on your appartments rules on holes in the wall, you could secure the panels with just a couple drywall screws along the top edge of the panels. Maybe one in each corner and one in the middle.

I knew a guy in the Air Force who glued 12"x12" egg trays to his walls. He liked to play his stereo loud.

Hey DancinBaer, thanks for those tips.

I guess I posed this as a tongue in cheek question and was wondering what other experiences out there.

Rarely if ever do i have the desire to play my Gibsons with a plectrum.

My Martins on the other hand, cry out to be played with a plectrum because they have so much more tone available when using the fingers.

I end up taking the plectrum to my Martins and that really brings out the potential in those guitars.

The Gibsons are quite content to just be bare plucked.

I'll have to ask my Landlord how he feels about me gluing egg trays on the walls :D

I think the old use a plectrum/pick or not use one has been a subjet for debate for many years, and will continue to rage on for many more. I tried honestly to do it, but have fallen short of gettingt the hang of it so have resolved to playing with only my fingers, strumming, and finger-style picking(appergio)? like you say it is amplified alot more with a pick and that doesn't really suit the music I choose to play, I prefer a softer tone and for me it works. I wonder how some would get on if they tried NOT to use one when they normally do, the shoe on the other foot so to speak. LOL. :D

Don't let anyone tell you either your suppose to use a plectrum that my friend is purely a personal choice, there is no right or wrong way!

For many years I "played" with the guitar and used my fingers. About a year ago after buying a new guitar, deciding I want to learn how to play the guitar and trying some actual lessons I attempted to use a pick. It took some time to find a pick that works for me. Now I switch between a pick and no pick depending on the song and feeling I want. Lately I've started focusing on playing more gently with a pick. Like anything, it takes practice.
