I'd just as soon just have the letter. C I'm gonna find the inversion I want anyway.

"High" or "top" string refers to pitch.
When we say "up the neck", we don't mean away from the floor, but to the part of the neck where the pitch is higher - closer to the bridge.

Until you get to numbering the strings. Then the highest number is the string that is lowest in pitch.
