Lowden Production Guitars?

Lowden is making a production line of guitars under the Avalon name. Their guitar parts are machine tooled, hand assembled and sell for about a grand less than a similarly configured hand built Lowden. This puts them in about the same price range as the Taylors. I played one today and was impressed by its loud, full and rounded sound. But, there weren't any Taylors in the store to compare it to. Has anyone heard of these guitatrs? -- played them? Compared them to a Taylor? What do you think??

I traded my cedar/ mahogany O10c for a Taylor 810B about 6 months ago. I don't miss that Lowden one little bit! It was a beast to play and sounded awful strummed (not bad fingerpicked though). When I was shopping for the Tayor I also tried out a number of other Lowdens, including small bodied walnut ones, and they were even worse- horrid actions, wide, unfriendly necks, and a really unpleasant sound when strummed. Maybe they are just fingerpicking guitars. Anyway, I do hope the new Avalon range offers something a little bit more versatile, though my Lowden experiences have put me off trying one!

Just curious . . . where did you try one?

I played one at a local music store in Boise, Idaho, called Dunkley Music.

Weren't there already 2 different Lowden lines. The George Lowden handbuilts and the other that bought the right to use his name.
