Not sure what drives the desire to own one over the other. Martin style guitars work very well for the kind of music I play, which is pretty traditional. I think Martin makes versatile instruments and absolutely think theyíre relevant. The Authentic guitars are some of the best being made, luthier or production.

I like good sounding, playable, and well built guitars. Iím not a Taylor guy or a Martin guy. Both make great guitars,

I owe no allegiance t the US, but I have high regard for the designs by Martin and Gibson in the first third of the 20th century, so if it doesn't look like a Martin or a Gibson I'm not really interested.
My first sight of Taylors was a Nanci Griffith concert and I heard a thin nasal trebly sound, then I sat in a small church hall and watched Dan Crary, and that confirmed to me that they didn't look right and didn't soud right.

Personal opinion.

With certain types of music Taylors do it well. Different tools for different jobs. Other brands can do this as well, but a Taylor is fine in this respect.

That was Nanci, not her guitar. :)

My impression is that people who prefer Taylors or Martins have probably never owned a Guild.

Hereís my thoughts, from a 26 year old. Martin and Taylor both make excellent guitars. I canít get along with the Martin neck profile, so Iíve never owned one. I think theyíre great and thatís the only thing keeping me from one. Taylorís are cool too. Iíve owned a few, sold them, they were good guitars.

But if youíre in one of those two camps ONLY, I may suggest you walk out of the Guitar Center and research a little only to find out thereís a few more brands out there that are even better than the two everyone knows about.
