There will be an arm bevel and a cut away comfort bevel which will be done in Macassar Ebony similar to the rosette. I am working out the additional flourishes for those bevels now.

Thank you Paul, It has some crazys figured woods and Redwood on Mahogany is a great combination for tone. In my opinion, its hard to find a good color of Redwood to go with this Tree Mahogany and I feel fortunate to have found a nice one.

Thanks Lonzo! Its a push to get the lines that thin for the inlay. It took some trial and error. I feel Ive got it down now.

Thanks ukejon, here is a little more woodness goodness. I have the fretboard bound and radiused. The fretboard is nicely figured Macassar Ebony. It has Ebony binding and Maple purfling.

Love the way the woods always speak so clearly on your builds, Mark. Visually and sonically!

Thanks Dustin! I am fortunate to be able to work with such wonderful woods. I try hard to show them off both visually and sonically. It is a matter of identifying a woods potential and letting that be the guide.

A whole lot of "awesome-ness going on here!! Just beautiful, Mark. Also love your new web site.

Ukulele_Eddie 12-31-2019 04:45 PM

Spectacular woods in this build. Will be following this closely. I have a tenor uke from The Tree (see avatar) with Lucky 12 spruce top. It is my pride and joy, as I suspect this will be for the lucky owner!

Erithon 01-01-2020 10:24 AM

Looks great, Mark! I like the way the light inlays and accents pop against the darker woods.

Thanks for commenting Ukulel_Eddie. Redwood on the Tree is a great combination.

Dark Redwood on dark Mahogany with dark Macassar Ebony, yeah it really set the stage for light colored wood inlays!

Mark Hatcher 01-02-2020 11:03 AM

Binding

I've started gluing on the binding. I am using Macassar Ebony. The back gets black wood-Maple-black wood purfling lines on both the side and the back.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fbe9f77f_c.jpg

Ever wonder why I say "black wood" purfling? Why not Black Ebony if I am going to use wood instead of the commonly used black fiber? The black wood is dyed Birch. I use Birch because it is softer than Ebony. Purfling is supposed to add a cushion between the hard binding and the tonewoodand Black Ebony wouldn't do that. I also use it because it is really black.

Neck Work

Here are a couple pictures of the neck coming together:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...906a1ca2_c.jpg

The face plate is from "The Tree". It has Macassar Ebony binding like the body and Maple purfling.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...628ee38d_c.jpg

Here are the mother of pearl side fret markers going in:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...08c102d1_b.jpg

On the back of the neck we have cross grained Macassar Ebony and Maple borders in the center laminates and the back of the headstock is also Macassar Ebony.

That looks amazing....silly side question: what glue do you use on inlay/side dots?

Mark Hatcher 02-19-2020 01:21 PM

That was hard.

Well that was a harder than I anticipated! After doing the flourish on the rosette my plan was to carry the theme over to the arm bevel. Except rosettes are pretty flat and arm bevels, not so much. After several tries and various techniques and I got it done!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...930060c9_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bff44f7f_c.jpg

Now that I have that figured out on a convex bevel it's time to take what I learned and carry it over to the concave cut-away bevel for another flourish to balance it all out!

David Wren 02-19-2020 02:06 PM

Love the inlay on the bevel Mark ... looks like a nightmare to execute, but beautiful!

Thank you David. I spent a lot of time on this one but, I've learned a lot in the process. I appreciate you commenting!

Cut Away Bevel

I have the Maple and Holly flourish in the cut away bevel. Here is a picture showing all the inlay work:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8a70293a_c.jpg

I just have clean up work to do now and it will be ready for finish. That's when all that figure in the top and back/sides will all come alive!

Nemoman 02-21-2020 12:29 PM

That is an amazing piece of artistry, Mark!

Kudos to you--can't wait to hear it!

islandguitar 02-21-2020 12:36 PM

Those inlays are AMAZING. Just love it........I don't think I've ever seen anything like that on those surfaces. Congrats on a spectacular job.

Lonzo 02-21-2020 12:56 PM

Ouch..

.. so pretty it hurts... a piece of art.. those 3 inlays really come to life as a composition... and the one in the cutaway bevel just has 1 wing and that is perfect.... subtly underlines the asymmetry of the upper bout....
and then the imagination of those wood patterns in back and sides, top and fretboard under finish..
Flabbergastingly beautiful I bet.
A looker ! Kudos Mark, yet another unique Hatcher !

TomB'sox 02-21-2020 05:14 PM

Wonderful workmanship, I am very fond of that rosette especially!!!

SJ VanSandt 02-21-2020 05:24 PM

I think that inlay is exquisite, Mark. It all works together brilliantly. I swear, you are going to convert me from my Spartan preferences yet!
