Let's just plop out the I and IV triads for the key of C and learn to

(numbering subject to change)

1) Play them straight out (indeed practical and common- but a somewhat limited little goal for what there is to be had)...find and play the inversions...

2) Strip them down to intervals (and invert those), double-stops and also single note lines....need to learn how to 'imply' harmony while the material IS SIMPLE!

3) build chord voicings (of all sorts) from themm.....and find 'dropped' voicings....

4) use them to build up scales with an emphasis on targeting chord tones....

- blues scale vs
-major pentatonic on I and IV, tespectively vs
-major hexatonic (which is just too cool to develop) vs
-mixolydian on both I and IV respectively...
-Robben Ford scale (min pent w/major 6 instead of b7) - love it like a Q!

have to learn to 'bring (spell) out the changes' while the material IS SIMPLE!

the 'dropped' thing...

if you were to take a triad and 'drop' one of its lower two notes...you'd get what is known as a dropped voicing...

ex) xxx988 is a C chord (as a triad)...that's the notes E on the 3rd string...G on the second string...and C on the first string....

if we drop the E on the 3rd string an octave we would get

x7xx88....still a plain old C chord...

but now we've got a better bass note at our disposal...

ex) con't) we could arpeggiate across a C or C7 form for 3 beats...say...here

x35353 C7

on beat 4 plop the pinky on the first string to get

x35355 C13

on the "&" of 4 play our dropped voicing

x7xx88

so that our bass moves chromatically to an Fsus2 on the beat of 1 in the next measure...

x 8 x 10 8 8

ughh...I'd change that rhythm.....

I'd get to the Fsus2 on the "&" of 4 (anticipation)

the Fminor would be x 8 x 10 9 8

hang there a couple beats and slip slide the intervals

to

back to xxx 10 x 10

to xxx 10 x 8 ( an implied G7sus4)

or G7sus4 as x 10 x 10 x 8
