Online Collaboration
Moderators feel free to move this post if it's better suited for another subforum.
My bandmates and I get together once a week for rehearsal. We'd like to practice together more often, but schedules won't allow. Does anyone know of a good online collaboration software or app? We'd like to be able to record and upload a track, (guitar for instance), then have the drummer be able to practice along with he recording, maybe add his drum line, and then the bassist and vocalist could practice or add in their parts. We would be practicing for live gigs only, therefore would not need online collaboration with an outside party (producers, etc). Does anything like this exist? Thanks for any thoughts or help. |
For what you’re talking about, I think Audacity would do the trick.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/ It’s free, developed as part of the GNU project. I know it works under Windows and Linux. I don’t know about Mac, but it’s easy enough to check. For the “upload” part, a shared cloud hosting service would do the trick for the band. (Dropbox, for example.). 100 GB is pretty cheap, and is enough to hold a lot of tracks, particularly if you save them as MP3s and not .wav files. |
a daw of your choice + an online file hosting like dropbox, box, etc should do the trick.

If you are doing MP3's, you can just use Google Drive to dump your tracks and then share them with each other. And it's free!
Here's a question: Are all y'all comfortable with a click track? |
Thanks for the replies. I was hoping there was an easy to use app that would accomplish our purpose. Not sure how to create MP3’s but I like the google drive idea.
Never used click tracks before but maybe we should. Other than google, any suggestions on how to get started with such? |
In regards to software, one has mentioned Reaper yet. It's awesome, and it's free (I think there's a trial period, but they don't force you to pay. Some of us do. Some of us don't.).
