More Urban Myth. I did when I owned a six and a 12 string dread. I fingerpick all my guitars, using my nails as picks.

Don't currently own any dreads, but a dread is a guitar isn't it? So why not fingerpick it? It says right here on my fingerpicking license that dreads are not excluded. :guitar:

Back in the 60s, it seems that all the folk acts that came to town were toting dreadnought guitars. And so were the native acts, like Jim Kweskin and Tom Rush. There was no ordinance against fingerpicking dreads, so they did.

Don

And once more Don's opinion gets the RP seal of approval....

Bill Mize and Ed Gerhard come immediately to mind

I fingerpick all of my guitars. I also strum them all using a flat-pick. Am I really bad?

We'll see. But only if you say 'fingerstyle'.

I bought my SCGC Dread cutaway in 1982 to play fingerstyle. It was before I discovered DADGAD and most of my songs were in DADF#AD. I finally got a Cruz OM in 1999.

Jackson C Frank played a D-28. Bert has covered a few of his songs. John Renbourn recorded Black Balloon with a D55. He toured with it as well. Four other fingerstylists I listen to almost every day play dreads pretty much exclusively (man those guilds are popular aren't they). I think John Butler's Maton 11 string is a dread. I am pretty sure the list goes on and on.
