What are some Acoustic Rock "Must Have" Albums?

I already have a lot of stuff by the Eagles, Tom Petty and Pink Floyd. I recently listened to a Traveling Wilburys album that I think is great. What are some other rock groups or albums similar to the above that really incorporate and bring out the acoustic guitar? I'm looking to expand my music library (and horizons).

Thanks!

This may sound silly but here are a few favourites of mine:

- I Remember You (Skid Row)
- Mama I'm Coming Home (Ozzy)
- Every Rose Has Its Thorn (Poison)
- More Than Words (Extreme)

Of course, there's Clapton's Unplugged as well as GNR Lies...

You should check out Monte Montgomery on utube. Probably the ultimate acoustic rock guitarist out there.

He is fantastic. That guitar of his is the "Trigger" of rock n roll! Its an Alvarez I am pretty sure?

John Hiatt is wonderful and entertaining

Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield boxed set
Poco - Poco
Loggins and Messina - Best of Friends
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

And IMHO the all time Gold Standard album of the genre:

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Deja Vu

Heart had some great tunes that showcased acoustic guitar (Love Alive, Crazy On You, Dreamboat Annie, etc.)

Monte on utube "little wings" pretty amazing. Don't think I want to loan him a guitar. He sure is hard of them but it is well worth the beating. Hey he uses the same pick and finger picking with the other fingers as I do. I think he has it down a little better better than I do.

Based on the albums you mentioned in OP, you might like the Thorns self-titled album. The Thorns are Shawn Mullins, Pete Droge, and Matthew Sweet. They only did one album together, to my knowledge. It's not all acoustic, but its heavily acoustic based with really tasty vocal harmonies ... think the Eagles, CSNY ... You might check it out.

Neil Young ("Comes A Time", "Decade", "Harvest", etc.)

Cat Stevens

Grateful Dead ("Reckoning")

Hot Tuna

Beatles "White Album"

Rolling Stones "Beggars Banquet"

Not strictly acoustic, but a number of Jethro Tull's early albums have some delightful acoustic guitar passages in them. Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, and Living in the Past are especially good.

TedShred 12-18-2009 07:36 AM

David Bowie "Hunky Dory"

kydave 12-18-2009 08:38 AM

The Byrds: "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"
Desert Rose Band: "anything"

Steve Earle - "Townes" (the 2 CD set of this LP has acoustic versions of all the cuts)
Danny Kalb and Stefan Grossman - "Crosscurrent"
Richard Thompson - "Small Town Romance"
Bruce Springsteen - "Nebraska Live" (Boot)
Warren Zevon - "Learning to Flinch"

A lot of rockers have done "Unplugged" recordings, quite often showing up as videos. One of the most interesting ones I've heard was Billy Idol doing "White Wedding" with just an acoustic guitar. It was pretty cool.

Pure Prarie League-Bustin' Out
David Bowie-Ziggy Stardust
and as has been mentioned, playing an acoustic version of songs you usually hear electric brings a whole new dimension. Me and a friend have been working on Elvis Costello's "Miracle Man" and I have to admit, we tear it up.

Some of the MTV unplugged albums are pretty classic like Clapton and Nirvana!!

James Taylor - Sweet Baby James
America - America
Eric Clapton - EC Was Here ( great version of can't find my way home )

I would give a serious listen to the Avett Brothers. their new album "I and Love and You" is good, but their older stuff is amazing. Check them out on youtube.

Also, the Decemberists may be the most original and entertaining band playing right now.

Hey Grampa,
Isn't Steve Stevens a monster player?? I saw them do that on a television special and I was blown away!

It's not what comes to mind when I am asked what 'acoustic rock' records do I suggest................How about the album that has 'Hey Grandma', the first Moby Grape album?

"8:05" is one of the most beautiful acoustic lead-ins to a song, ever.

That's Peter Lewis, son of Loretta Young, playing the fingerpicking part.

Now watch all the young bloods go scrambling to find this album!

This, along with Buffalo Springfield is what I cut several of my teeth on!

Best,
Howard

Hi Dave,
No, sorry, I have not heard of the band or the album. Any suggestions or track links you can suggest?
