A poignant song from an aging guitarist/singer/songwriter

I thought I would put this out here, perhaps as a sentimental exercise. As the baby boomers get older (my older brothers and sisters <g>), their music idols are passing away or have lost the ability to play music. Bruce Cockburn released a new collection of songs last fall and I thought this one in particular resonates. He has arthritic hands and anticipates a day when he cannot play guitar anymore.

I remember posting something about Cockburn in the past and it did generate some negative political comments. Let me say in advance that I don't think there is anything political about getting old.

Here is a clip of him talking about his aching fingers:

So much out there, and here’s another one!

Love the song!

While I had heard his name many times over the past 30 some years, it wasn't until a few years ago when I came upon a few of his CD's at a pawn shop that I actually listened to the man.

Monster guitar player, er, I should say monster musician. Great songs, superb playing and a totally unique style. Some of his songs (and playing) are downright scary!

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing BC at every stage of his career, including just a couple of years ago. I remember being horrified when he came on stage with an electric guitar in 79 or 80. But then he went on to show that it’s not the choice of acoustic or electric that makes the music; his music stands on its own regardless.

He seems to be aging well though. I believe the key is to keep the fingers moving. Stopping for any length of time (when you are older) makes it very difficult to pick back up. Take a look at Keith Richards’ knuckles. They are in very bad shape from arthritis, but he won’t stop.

Bruce has voiced political views in his music as you stated, and I am not generally a fan of politics in music, but he always did it with class. He was never obnoxious about it, as some tend to be.

Truly a great writer. If one has the stomach
for politics then musical fame is certainly
a good venue to express your viewpoint
whether your Bruce Cockburn or Charlie Daniels .

Followed his music since the 60's. he's been a huge musical presence up here for a long while, catch him while (if) you can.
That Manzer is a very fine compliment to his voice.

We got to see him in September. I was shocked by old he looked, it had been a few years since I'd seen him.

That said he sang and played as well as ever. Truly an amazing talent.

excellent musician. Some of my favorites are Humans, Further adventures and Stealing Fire. Bob Dylan gets a lot of attention to his lyrics but I find Bruce's lyrics are just genius.
I love the humorous lyrics he sometimes throws in.....

Smiling girl directing traffic flow
45 strapped over cotton print dress
marimba brown and graceful limbs
Give me a moment of loneliness...

From Dust and Diesel off of Stealing Fire

I have always found Bruce's lyrics to be second to none. Add the guitar work and you have the consummate musician. Being a folkie, I like his Circles in the
Stream album to be among his finest, show casing an early Larrivee to boot. Slice O' Life is also superb.

He's from my home town and basically a legend. Great song and interview.

Dancing in the Dragons Jaws
Stealing Fire
Nothing But a Burning Light

I really thought Bruce was done writing and recording. This new record is a very pleasant surprise.
