Your Favorite Guitar for Small Solo Gigs
 

I enjoy small, solo gigs with my Martin 00-28 with K&K Pure Mini -- played through a Fishman Loudbox Artist. Sitting most of the time and play 1950's thru 80's for the most part.

What is your favorite small, solo gigging guitar ?

I do a lot of alternate tuning playing so I like to bring two or three guitars tuned differently depending on what I plan to play. If I’m only bringing one guitar, it’s either the Froggy Bottom L or the Larson Stahl

All my gigs are small solo gigs!

I play my Taylor 314ce at resort pool parties in the summer but otherwise I’ll play my D-18 with a Baggs Lyric.

The past 4 or 5 gigs I played my HD-28 with K&K Pure Mini. My PA is a Carvin Stagemate with a matching extension speaker.

I had a small solo gig not so long ago. Given how low pressure it was, I thought I'd take a chance and bring my Loar LH-200sb with a baggs M1 and the Bose S1 pro. Far from my high end gear, I was shocked at how good that combo sounded. I think I payed maybe $225 for the guitar?

I use a Huss & Dalton Road Series sitka/rosewood dreadnought, with monel strings, and a K&K, directly into my mixer.

Depending on how I feel on the given day I usually either my Martin 000-17e with the factory Fishman pickup or my Farida OT-22 with a Baggs M1. Straight into my Fishman Loudbox Performing Artist amp for both guitar and vocals. I've played for 10 people with that set up and I've played for close to 400 with no issues. I played a wedding on Saturday with my Taylor 710 (JJB pickup) into the Loudbox and then lined out into my Bose L1C and covered a really long room with about 150 people. I needed the Bose because I needed to cover the long room at a lower volume than I could do with just the Loudbox. The guests were very complimentary of the quality of sound and volume level.

I’m comfortable playing this guitar, as I’ve played it a lot. For duo or combo work, I use a J 50.

Henderson D28 tuned to standard for flatpicking and filddle tunes, Olson SJ for fingerstyle tunes and instrumentals. I'd mic them with a few vintage Neumanns and instead of running that into a PA, I run those into a pair of Dumbles (for stereo) and probably a have a couple Klon Centaurs in the chain to add a couple different kinds of grit ;-)

For real, though, i usually take my favorite guitar at the moment (typically a 00 or 000 type for versatility) and I LOVE my Schertler Jam amp cuz it has lots of inputs, can dial in nicely and depending on the gig, can be my personal mixer output to the PA or can be the PA.

* All my shows are solo acoustic with an occasional percussionist for reggae etc... and most of my shows are outside tiki bars, partying on the Florida coast. For those 95% of shows I highly prefer my Takamines. However, there are a handful shows at small bistros where I play low volume and do more JT fingerstyle tunes, and for that I like to bring my D18 that has an M80 mag. It has such a lovely f/s tone in that combo.

** Amp wise I have one Loudbox Artist and two Performers; the Performers get used 99.9% because my old Artist is my backup mostly these days, but I will say that I've always thought the Artist to be a warmer amp then it's bigger brother Performer. Sometimes those small, low volume gigs where your just a wallflower, allow you to kick back and enjoy without all that crazy bar noise. Plus I don't have to "on" so to speak or a center of attention... I'm liking these type gigs more and more as I age LOL!!

Martin M-36 (or occasionally my Larrivee OM-O3) with Fishman Matrix Infinity into Fishman Aura Spectrum DI into my Marshall AS50D acoustic amp.
OR my Pro Series Takamine FP350 SMC-SB into Fishman Platinum Stage EQ/DI into my Marshall AS50D acoustic amp. Both rigs sound good in their own way.

Depending on the performance setting, style of music, and how rowdy the crowd will be; My Martin setup I take to church or a coffee house while my Takamine setup goes the rowdy route sometimes with my old Fender Acoustasonic amp.

For me it's my Yamaha SLG200s and my AER Compact 60 . I like this combo due to the combined portability . All my live playing is now done weekly during worship at our local churches . If we have a large service planned I use two acoustic amps in stereo ( Using a Flashback delay pedal) and I also use my Yamaha LLTA
