I've been reading up on it, they call it the poor man's Neumann. Mostly getting good reviews.

I found a video shootout between the Sennheiser MK4 vrs the Neumann U87ai.....I couldn't hear any difference.....

I heard significant differences between the 2 in the shootout you linked.
See Dave Rat's excellent video about YouTube audio limits, since you're using YT for audio comparisons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev6TIB1gNVM |
I get it, You Tube is far from a perfect means of testing audio quality for microphones, however, at this time I don't have either mic available for any other means of testing. So I rely on You Tube to give me a general idea of what to expect. Sure there should be some difference between the mics, as one is priced at $3800 vrs $300 for the other. That's a huge difference in price. I found no such difference in audio quality between the two mics, to justify spending the extra $3500.....there may be some subtle differences, but I sure didn't hear them.
Anyhow, the MK4 is scheduled for delivery today, and I'm excited to put it thru my own tests with my own system. I won't be running sine waves thru it to get exact readings, but I'll be listening to audio quality with various guitars and vocals. From what I've read, there should be a significant difference between the MK4 and the AKG C214's I recently sold off. The MK4 should be a nice upgrade for me. Just the fact that somebody is doing a shootout between the MK4 and the U87ia speaks volumes for the MK4. |
Another selling point for me is the Sennheiser name in microphones. Sennheiser has been a trusted name for decades. My experience with their MD 421's has been excellent. They also own and build Neumann mics. Obviously they are aware that the Neumann mics are too pricey for most home studios, and they have the Sennheiser brand to cater to the home studio crowd. That's me. Quality mics at affordable cost.
I'm planning on pairing this mic with Solid State Logic's SSL2+ audio interface, which should sound great thru my system for recordings. Both products are fairly new on the market, within a year, so hurray for continuous improvement of audio products. |
It's here and sounds great !!!

I actually do audio work for Sennheiser...and have had the opportunity to play with a lot of their gear. They make some very nice mics. I'm sure you'll enjoy the mk4. |
