Good Celtic Guitarists?
Who are players who have mastered the feel of ITM, STM ect?

Tony McManus Steve Baughman Martin Simpson Pierre Bensusan John Doyle Paul Brady Probably 100's more, depending on what you're looking for. |
ITM = Irish Traditional Music. (The sterner branches dislike guitar almost as much as drums and ETM (the sometimes denied English Traditional Music) and also the word Celtic).
STM = Scottish Traditional Music presumably. |

Looking for players like Tony McManus, who knows traditional tunes, can play both solo and as backup, and is advanced at both fingerstyle and flatpicking.
Thanks for the names. |
Also:
Duck Baker El McMeen Alec Stone Sweet Bennett Hammond Pat Kirtley John Renbourn Davey Graham Soig Siberil (Breton, but similar genre) Al Petteway Rolly Brown ...and more... Jack |
Dick Gaughan? (maybe he's more Scots than Irish, despite the name)
Here's my favourite tune of his (from a Burns poem, ie Scots): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ7oYCx6tBw But this sounds Irish enough to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrdl4ijru8o |
Another vote for both Al Petteway and Rolly Brown.

Arty McGlynn should get a lot of the credit for bringing the guitar into the traditional music arena. He was the first I know of to feature flatpicked solo renditions of the repetoire.

The first Celtic guitarist I listened to was Richard Searles (seer-less).
Clean - responsive - very melodic Here's a great sample of his style: "A Thousand curses on Love" http://www.earthdancemusic.com |
Thanks, gibbyguy, for the link to Richard Searles. I hadn't heard of him, and now, thanks to you, I've discovered a new great musician. I love renaissance music, and he does a lot of it, with good arrangements. Not to mention the celtic stuff, and his own compositions. Thank you.
