Is mahogany always plain or can it have figure?

Hello,

Most mahogany I see looks really similar and plain. Little or no figuring in the wood. Other than Honduran mahogany, which has variation and undulation, and the Tree mahogany, which has incredible figure, are there other types of mahogany with interesting figuring?

Thanks.

There's a Cuban mahogany guitar that's been shown here with pretty grain.

The mahogany on my inexpensive Cordoba C9 is very pretty:

That Cordoba looks like sapele to me.. I may be wrong. There are many beautiful figured mahoganies around, when I get a spare moment I will post some photos.

My 2013 Taylor 514e Fall Limited was built around curly Mahogany.

In the Fall edition of Wood & Steel, Andy Powers said that one of their wood suppliers sent pictures of a tree that had been cut into, and had figuring. Taylor bought the tree, and used the wood for their Fall Limited series. Powers said it was a genetic anomaly, and that only a portion of the tree had figuring.

I really like the range of figure that's available with mahogany. Something that really appeals to me is that a 'plain' set, when viewed closely, can display a wonderful figure to its grain.

On the other hand, there are the sets more visibly figured from a distance. Here's my Cuban Mahogany guitar:

Man some beautiful wood here!

I have some Philippine mahogany with some amazing flame, and a bit denser than typical. "Tree" mahogany is in the "Unobtanium" realm, but there is some spectacular figured sapele (ceck out pomelle sapele) though not a true mahogany....
