Chasson Build - Cedar/Cocobolo

Dear AGF Members,

It was simply a pleasure to have Kent to build this guitar ... let the photos do the talking ...

It started with a few choices and this one was chosen ...

After the initial flat sanding ...

Kent is very sincere about offering ideas to make things better. Since there is a strip sapwood on the back, we decided to carry this feature forward into the other parts of the guitar.

Thanks for viewing. Here're the specs,

1. Body Style: Auditorium
2. Frets to the Body: 14
3. Top: Western Red Cedar
4. B/S: Cocobolo
5. Fingerboard: Cocobolo
6. Neck width at nut: 1-3/4"
7. String spacing at bridge: 2-1/4"
8. Rosette: Chasson's signature rosette, Thuya
9. Binding: Ebony
10. Tuning m/c: Schaller Black
11. Pickguard: Clear Mylar
12. Options: Soundport

The above specs appear to be common and it is ... however it is the way Kent builds the guitar that made it unique. Possibly I am the first Asian or Singaporean client he received. While there are many fine luthiers out there but Kent's attitude in embracing both the traditional construction means and the curiosity for innovation set him aparts from those I know.

As long as an idea is viable, Kent is always curious to try it out. I guess this is the joy of custom building a guitar that carries a tint of risk of innovation and uncertainty. If one yearns for a proven innovation a.k.a. a paradox, selecting from the shelves is probably the way to go.

I leave it to Kent to fill us in with his thoughts if he wishes to ... ;)

Wow! That is stunning cocobolo. I like everything else about it too.

Dru Edwards 05-23-2011 07:34 AM

All I can say is that is absolutely stunning!!! What an amazing figure.

Thanks everybody. This has been a fun one. Adam has been great to work with.

Here are two more photos of the neck going together. I like to put in the frets before the fretboard gets glued to the neck. To help that process along, I made a block that mates with the compound radius fretboard and keeps everything flat while it's being glued.

I hope to get this out to the finisher in the next few days and will take a few more pictures then.

wow. I've admired Kent's work for a long time but that fretboard and headstock overlay - and "integrated" TRC - is outstanding!!!!

Thanks, Phil. I hope you have been safely out of the path of all the tornados.

We had no problems - just 3/4" of rain in 10 minutes! - but do know some friends who lost a house & truck etc.

I was actually sitting here last night, watching the line of t-storms approach, and wondering what I'd be replacing my guitars with if my house ended up looking like a stack of matchsticks! At least they are insured!!

That really is one of the most striking neck/fretboard/headstocks I've seen. Very very nice!!!

Best,

Phil
