Peghead almost ready for trip to see Larry ...
More work on the neck and peghead. Steve is leveling the back of the peghead and bringing it to the desired thickness. Second photo has the backplate veneers added. That's one juicy backplate!
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3827/...f97d4d_o_d.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2904/...a607ec_o_d.jpg This last shot for today shows Ryan bending the Ebony bindings. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2853/...4fcb46_o_d.jpg |
Coming right along Dennis....not to poke a hornet's nest, but does this neck have to be shipped out for the torch inlay on the headstock?

Looks as if the back plate's glued on with washing up liquid. Of course it's not, but what is it?

No, Dave is right. Dawn Ultra, for Dennis deserves the best on this guitar.
Actually, my thoughts ran along this line, that if this neck is lost in transit, at least we won't have lost more of that too-expensive epoxy. Mahogany and Ebony and Bloodwood grow on trees and are always so underfoot. But this glue...sheesh! We can't be slathering it around here and there willy nilly as if it were replaceable. And then, see, when Dennis becomes weary of this backplate (as all guitarists eventually do) he can gently glide it off and replace it with something else. Just replace it with more Dawn as per factory specs. I hope this helps... P.S.-- disregard Ryan's nonsense. |

The way we were ...
Once Steve has ramped the slots for strings I believe we are back to where we were before the USPS stepped in. This neck/peghead will shortly be making it's way to Larry while we all hold our breath!
The famous Kinnaird peghead shape. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3844/...e26d45_o_d.jpg Peghead sideview. This is going to look so good under finish with those Alessi tuning machines attached. Oh yeah! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3722/...8ca809_o_d.jpg Drilling the tuner holes. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3857/...69485d_o_d.jpg Routing the slots. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3671/...408ff7_o_d.jpg Routed for binding and ready to have the string ramps cut (and an all-wood torch inlaid). https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2942/...237af2_o_d.jpg |
Looking good so far...of course so did the first one...(sorry could not resist).

Larry did ask what we would do IF the original turns up somehow? Probably build another guitar for Dennis! :D:D:D (Someone pick up Dennis from the floor) |
Actually, that might be nice. To get a totally reworked body to go with the recreated neck. Two geetars for the price of one ... how could I go wrong?
|
Nice shots! Fun thread to follow...looks to be an awesome build!

Bag that puppy up!
No worries ... Steve has recovered. We haven't picked out the back and sides for the second guitar yet but I'm sure he will select something good! ;)
End of day yesterday had the peghead bound and purfled (if that's even a word?), nut slot is cut and the slots ramped. Time to put our trust in a shipper. Hmmm ... who may that be? Hmmm! https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3698/...797a08_o_d.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2899/...a630bb_o_d.jpg |
Second trip to Larry for the torch ...
For the second time around the neck/peghead is off to Larry to inlay the torch. I am happy to report it has been successfully delivered (thank you FedEx)!
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2860/...d5f8f0_o_d.jpg Meanwhile, back at the ranch ... work continues. Here Steve adds the soundport binding. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2867/...602a40_o_d.jpg A glimpse of the soundport from the side. The darker areas on the sides are the remnants of some protective shellac. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2933/...eca0ab_o_d.jpg And the body begins to come together. Here the back is attached to the sides. I love this high-tech approach. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2893/...5333bb_o_d.jpg I am off to the Artisan Guitar Show this weekend. I hope to get some good photos and video from there and post over on that thread. |
Looking good Dennis, that back and side wood is so incredibly beautiful....color me jealous.
Wish I could have made it this weekend, was going to take today off, instead ended up needing to work today AND tomorrow morning!!!! Go figure. Have fun. |
Rosette anyone ???
Steve and I have been talking about my rosette. We want it to fit nicely with the fretboard TOL and peghead torch which is quite the challenge. Steve came up with an awesome idea to use some swirly things from the fretboard and and element or two from the torch inlaid in a center ring of Ebony surrounded inside and out by half herringbone Verawood rings to match the purfling we talked about for the top. The wood for the rosette elements will match those used in the fretboard and peghead, namely both shades of Madi, Bloodwood and green tinted Maple. Being the Photoshop crazy person I am, I worked up this mockup.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2885/...6dd7c1_o_d.jpg So Ryan has the base setup with the center Ebony ring and the bwb with teflon spacer in position for the Verawood. I think this will be the ticket. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2888/...942d9d_o_d.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2866/...6fb676_o_d.jpg |
Holy cow Dennis, that will be awesome. You missed your calling, you should be a graphic design artist or something....that looks amazing. Good Luck Steve and Ryan in getting it done to look like that!!!! AND I love the Kinnaird fret board flourish at the end too. That adds so very much.

Great collaboration you guys--that rosette will look schweeet will the other elements you have going on!
|
Inspirational
That looks great! It gives me ideas. Thanks for the look and good luck bro getting that cut out and inlayed.

Most impressive looking indeed!

We kicked around the idea at work today of simply printing Dennis' rendering on high quality paper, and gluing it around the sound hole. That way, it would look exactly as Dennis drew it.
Can you say découpage? (Can you spell it?!) Anyway, it could get scratched up with vigorous playing and simply be replaced. Always looking out for you, Dennis! |
Awesome
What a monster rosette! Dennis you rock the photoshop app!
This will be so fine.... And it is a Kinnaird, so we all know the sound will be astonishing, too! Nice going guys Cheers Paul |

Woah... you could have fooled me with that photoshopped rosette! Now the pressure is on Steve to make sure he meets that standard ;)
|
Ah, no pressure...
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: |
I trust what Steve and Ryan work up on this will be great. Steve dreamed up the rosette design. I just used some technology to make a pretty picture they can use to visualize. The guitar looks awesome so far. There is no reason to believe it doesn't get even better from here!

Safe at home in Texas ...
Received a long awaited email from my good friends at Kinnaird Guitars last night! The finished TOL fretboard and torch peghead are in their hands. Fantastic news! And WoW ... Wow ... Wow did Larry knock this one out of the park! Even in these quickie photos you can see the incredible detail work. Can't wait this baby up close.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2890/...c2629d_o_d.jpg This torch is better than I imagined and under finish will really pop against the Ebony. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3927/...faf75a_o_d.jpg And as I knew they would, they Texas Kinnairds have begun to amaze with their work on our rosette. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3939/...2a2620_o_d.jpg I am charged up on this build. Exceeding my hopes on so many levels. Tremendous! |
