Yamaha NTX1200R opinions?
 

I was thinking of adding this or the NTX700 to balance out my D-18. Has anyone tried these models?

I had a 700 a few years ago. Thin tone unplugged and the neck and my fretting hand just weren’t compatible. I now have an Alvarez HC 60. Cheaper and better all around. That’s my $.02 fwiw.

Best plugged-in, but I think it’s a really nice choice.

Had a NCX700 - wider neck "classical" version of these. Really exquisite sound plugged in. Did sell to a friend who wanted to learn C.G. He loves it.
Hard to say - for recording or playing amp'd it would be great, unamplified as one's only nylon not so much. Pretty guitar for sure.

Terrible when not plugged in. Truly horrid. Try the NTX500 for a cheaper version which sounds the same and still is great plugged in.

NOX 1200r corrections. Now great
 

Bought a minty used one a few weeks ago. All above comments are accurate and valid but easily corrected.

1. Stupid narrow plastic nut replaced with bone with E to E spacing of 40.4 mm.

2. Stupid narrow plastic saddle was replaced with bone and strings 2 and 5 notched outward .75 mm and strings 1 and 6 notched out 1.5 mm to add
3.0 mm wider in total. String holes unchanged.

3. Put on D’Addario EJ46 ff High Tension strings.

Plays and sounds great. Excellent plugged in.

I don't care what you do to that model guitar. It'll never sound good unplugged.

As Dove stated, replace the nut with one with wider spacing and you have a wonderful guitar plugged in. Not horrible unplugged in a small music room either. Much prefer the neck to a Cordoba crossover I tried. Plug in, tap the top, and get realistic drum sounds through the amp. Flamenco, classical, easy listening fingerstyle, blues...all at your fingertips with great eq on the on-board preamp. Sounds good through my keyboard, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar amps. After 4 years and lots of time on it, it's held up very very well. Highly recommend my NTX1200R!

I bought an NTX1200R but returned it right away. Unplugged it sounded dead. My cheap $100 Stagg sounded better.

I ended up with a Cordoba Solista spruce top and I love it. I got it as a B stock for $800 off Reverb. Well worth the price. Comes with a Humidicase too. The 45 LTD with the laminate sides sounded great also. Both of these are made in Spain. Way better in my opinion than the NTX1200.

Great choice. Yamaha makes awesome music gear (and motorcycles). I've owned a lot of it. Their regular classicals sound great unplugged, but the NTX series is dead unless amplified. I've got several Yamaha and Cordoba instruments in the man cave right now. I've had 16 Cordoba instruments. None of them were the NTX'. Too bad. They sure look great, but tone is everything.

P.S. I've owned three Espana series instruments, and preferred the Chinese Luthier series ones. But to each his/her own. They're all great.

I thought about a C10 or C12. C10's were running $600 and I thought for $200 more I could get a guitar form Spain. I heard some say they prefer the C10 over the C12.

What models did you like the best, and what is your thoughts on cedar top verses spruce?

I dunno about a C10, but I have an F10 flamenco, and had a C12 SP/IN classical. Both were/are awesome. That C12 was punchy and bold. Very high quality. I tend generally to prefer the brightness of spruce. But have had a few cedars that I loved. In steel strung instruments, despite never actively seeking out cedar tops, I've bought two older used cedar-topped instruments (1995 Lakewood M-22 and 2004 Avalon L32c) recently that could hang with any of the spruce topped ones I've ever owned in terms of punch, volume, and boldness... but with enough sizzle to satisfy me. So I think that build quality/type is more important in most acoustics than wood choice. There are differences, but they are often subtle.

Larry, by my calculations you now have 3.6mm/.14" from the center of each E-string to the edge of the fretboard (at the nut). Does that sound about right - after your modification? Was it quite a bit more before your modification?

Did you ever figure out how to post photos? (if so, you are better than I).
