Not sure. But it sounds like it's made from cardboard and spaghetti noodles.

Also it sounds like he's trying to imitate someone from the past. Not sure who. Pass.

I have no clue but it has a Gibson J-185 vibe about it. It almost looks like a cross between a Gibson and a Martin. That raggy, buzzy tone is something that really works with his voice and vibe in my opinion.

It’s brilliantly done, and he worked hard to get that particular ‘sitar’ sound.

It thoroughly fits the ambiance and aura the song is going for.

He may have something squashed underneath the capo pad that helps achieve the effect.

The first time I heard this guy, I couldn't quite grasp what he was doing, vocally ,musically, and even the guitar...

After a few listens to some of his stuff, I think I appreciate his songs, voice and guitar for the same reasons I like guys like Tom Waits...

Not everybody's cup of tea, but I think he's a talented one of a kind in a landscape littered with clones...

Howard, if you like this, you need to listen to Tyler Childers also.

Not even sure why people compare the two. Tyler has an excellent voice and his guitar doesn't sound like a cigar box.

Plus his sound is more americana/folk/bluegrass. And it's authentic because he's from Kentucky.

This Colter guy is canadian and tries to pull off the Texas vibe. Idk just seems really fake.

I have no problem with the sound. Not particularly to my taste but if it works for him then that's fine.

I wouldn't say you had to work hard to get a guitar there though... I have a 70s Gibson that does it where the nut slots are worn out, and the frets are pitted.

He is clearly drawing from different influences but he seems pretty authentic to me. I hear it as a kind of outlaw vibe that doesn't really belong to any specific region. But I do know what you mean when someone just takes on an accent, it can be off-putting. But, embodying a presence is something different. Like Gillian Welch - when I first heard her, I thought that she was born and raised in Appalachia, but I later found out that she was from Southern California (I think). But she embodies a whole culture in her music and is committed to the expression of that so there is an honoring that happens that transcends any falseness. IMHO.

Yes, I found his vibe really engaging and to me it seems that he's worked to find what he wants to do with both the guitar and the vocal.

That is what I really responded to. He captured my attention with his voice but kept me there because of a presence that he has committed to, if that makes sense.

I apologize for derailing the thread - I am still happy to discover what the guitar is. :)

I agree with Howard and think the sound of the guitar fits his voice. Also, in interviews some of his favorite music is old blues and he loves that sound so fret buzz makes sense in light of that.

I really enjoy his music and think his song "The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie" is one of my favorites of his!

As to being Canadian, I do not see how that has any bearing on what type of music you should or should not sing?
