Archtop Photo Thread
Archtops are the most elegant of guitars. The organic flow is musical even when the guitar rests on a stand. I hope you will share your photos even if they have been posted elsewhere previously. We all enjoy seeing them.

A size comparison of my big archtop with a dread cutaway and an auditorium sized guitar.

I record with it more than any other. http://www.marcellis.net/music/archtopalone.jpg http://www.marcellis.net/music/humpb...eupreduced.JPG You can hear it on my youtube channel. It's used in several songs there, including this one. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nz6oKwsKR2c |
This is my Ibanez, 2471NT archtop, I bought it new in 1978. These guitars were handmade, and are somewhat rare.
It started out without a pickup, but I added the Johnny Smith. It features a carved spruce top, with laminated maple back and sides. Very good acoustic tone, especially with the D'Addario Chrome flats, light gauge. Electrically it sounds very much the same as it does acoustic, but with deeper bass and crisper trebles available. It's a dream to play and sounds fantastic through my BF VibroluxReverb. However, it will feed back if pushed too loud so I generally use it for non-drummer gigs. I like it for R&B, blues, folk, country, or pretty much anything you could think of. Works well finger style or flat picked. I have also been using it for solo work, combining an external mic with the Johnny Smith pup to add little more acousticness to the mix. I run the pickup through a RedEye DI, sending direct to the board and also to the Vibrolux. Very usable sound, and a nice way to escape the UST quack blues. http://newsom.ca/ibanez/Ibanez 2471NT -1.jpg http://newsom.ca/ibanez/Ibanez 2471NT -2.jpg http://newsom.ca/ibanez/Ibanez-2471NT-3.jpg |

I gave it to a client about three years ago though because I had too many guitars sitting around. I bought it new. I didn't know it was a knock-off of anything. What guitar does it knock off? I bought it because of the sound. I asked for the flying Goose to be inlaid on the head stock when I bought it. I think I paid $400 for it. That was maybe 5 years ago. I put a Baggs active pick-up in it. --- Just remeasured my archtop. It's no knock-off. I've never seen one like it. 4 inches deep binding to binding. Add another 1/2" maybe for the rear hump. Anyone who plays it falls in love with it. It's hanging in my wife's restaurant right now. |

Works pretty well, but the stick can poke your wrist depending on how you play. Also, the treble-to-bass height proportion is fixed by the angle of the taper (unless you sand something to compensate). |
Sorry for the delay. It took a little while to organize them.

I must say again Steve work is just amazing, and he's super nice. It's a real treat working with him, I recommend him to anyone who wants a custom guitar. |

My first attempt to post a picture here:

Gorgeous guitars, guys and gals! Here are my contributions - a reverse chronological photo essay of every archtop I've owned. I've included both electric and acoustic archtops, but my preference these days is definitely for acoustics:
Collings AT16 - the only one that I currently have: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...ps96ac9d9b.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...psa37307db.jpg 1958? Epiphone Century - this is my Grandpa's, but it's on loan with my dad (who doesn't play), so I play it a lot. Sounds phenomenal with flat wounds through a low wattage tube amp! http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...psb8fe41de.jpg Eastman AR810CE: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...ps2e6d4804.jpg Thorell Frank Vignola model: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...psc908badc.jpg Benedetto Frank Vignola Standard: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture246.jpg Eastman AR371: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture196.jpg Gretsch Setzer Hot Rod: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture170.jpg 1933 L-7, full (gorgeous) refinish, which was required due to a past owner trying to refinish it in natural and doing a hack job! This guitar was amazing, and is one of the few ones that I truly miss! http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...s/IMG_8087.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture146.jpg |
Too many photos for one post! Here are the rest:
Custom Benedetto Bambino: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture093.jpg Bourgeois LC-4: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...s/IMG_5121.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...s/IMG_5122.jpg Eastman AR904: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture016.jpg Martin CF-2: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...s/IMG_8460.jpg Gretsch Brian Setzer: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...Picture069.jpg Benedetto Bambino - the first guitar I GAS'd over in probably 15 years. I blame it on the crazy 6 years of GAS that have followed! http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...s/IMG_4265.jpg It's been a fun ride, that's for sure!!! :D |
Here's my Artist Award (pictures from Archtop.com where I bought it):
