Aw man I think this version is awful
I like a lot of Rafferty 'motown' stuff but this is just not the song.

awful????????????????

I am not sure if "awful" is the right word for Adam's guitar art....

So what - everybody has his own groove!

Yeah its the boom chick thing which I think is awful and not suited to the song - it forgets the song
You can play this song in a classic Jazz styling (Ella) or medium bop ( Solo Joe Pass) or even new age pop easy listening ala Eva Cassidy style but not boom chick; it just doesn't fit.

The artificial harp harmonics at the start looked forced and he misses too many of them and doesn't look comfortable; jut not a good arrangement in my opinion - someone as good as Rafferty i tend to judge quite strongly as I expect lot so I still totally respect him as a great player.

The guitar must be exceptionally good. I swear I could hear Eva Cassidy somewhere in the background :)

But I much prefer the first half; a mildly up-tempo swing has little to do with the words of an exceptional song.

I think it's cool...

I guess I'm of the opinion that when you're covering a song you're allowed to use as much artist license as you want...especially a 70 yr old standard that's been done to death as much as autumn leaves. Whether or not it evokes the same atmosphere as the original is irrelevant; it's not the original.

I believe a cover (if you're an artist) should be as much about you as it is about your subject matter. Put your influences on the table...nothing's sacred.

I dig Julian Lage's version

Hi Steve,

you have your own taste and it's OK for me. Adam is a great player and it is a very special version. You don't like this version and i have to respect that.

Agreed...it was a cutesy stomp all over a saaad, beautiful melody.

I'm all for doing your own thing, but this did not work.

And I do think the tune can work at faster tempos...but Rafferty's walking bass was stiff and uninspired...Didn't swing at all.

Lage's version is incredible...and he's improvising!

I believe, it all comes down to taste. If Adam feels very strongly about his arrangement, I respect that. Personally, I judge musical arrangements of a known song by disregarding the original version and look for what the new arrangement has to offer in terms of creativity and musicality.
