Great deal on digital recorder.

Guitar Center just slashed the price of the TASCAM DR-05 digital recorder down to $59 from $99. This little recorder is small enough to fit in a guitar case. It also works great as a personal monitor and is small enough to tie a string around and wear it around your neck while playing.

Here's a sample of what it sounds like. This was recorded dry in one take on the DR-05 with no post processing.

Sounds pretty darn good. Might have to try one out. Thanks for the heads up.

I just grabbed one of these. I've always been a YouTube video person, but lately that seems like more work than its worth. With this, I can do single take recordings (anywhere I want as opposed to always being tied to sitting in front of my computer) and post them on SoundCloud where they can be downloaded by fans. I don't use my SoundCloud account as I should, this will change that.

It's also worth it to note that GC is doing a "Big Payback" event through qualifying purchases tomorrow. You get a $10 eCertificate on purchases of $50 or more.

Also, Tascam offers a $20 mail in rebate on this recorder. Purchase must be made by 4/30 and submissions must be postmarked by 5/5/14. That slashes the price to $39.99.

Thanks for the heads up, RMZ!

Thanks! I'll be grabbing one tomorrow with GC's offer!

RMZ...............great recording! For an untouched recording, that recorder is great.

Wow, thank you for the info on the rebate and "Big Payback"... To add a little more to my review after tinkering with it last night, I have to say I am very, very impressed with this little guy. A few years ago I paid $200 for a ZOOM digital recorder that was stolen and like you I've just been using a notebook PC to record and have gotten addicted to all the signal processing (compressor, EQ, reverb). Doing a few takes with the DR-05 last night I rediscovered how much I like my mixes without all that color added. I should add though, that it does have some basic signal processing built in if you want to use it. It offers a level balancer/compressor (not turned on in the sample recording above) and also high cut and low cut (also not turned on for the sample above)

So far like everything about the DR-05 better than the ZOOM recorder I had. The menus are easy to navigate (two clicks to delete a take, two clicks to start recording again). The interface on the ZOOM I never cared for. Live mix monitor works great, I'm using the Samsung buds that came with my Galaxy S4. Comes with a 2GB SD card and batteries so ready to go out of the box.

Tascam DR-05

Wow, great deal! Thanks for the heads up... just bought one! I've heard these were good little recorders, so this was just the little nudge I needed to pick one up. Thanks!

picassov7 04-05-2014 10:21 AM

Just picked up mine...thanks Rmz!

Hey All,

Can you strum chords then solo lead over the top?

I can't hear the song file. The play head appears to move but totally silent. Checked my audio settings on computer and they are fine...

Anand00028 04-05-2014 01:13 PM

Thanks for the heads up.
That is a steal once the rebates are figured in !

Thanks, I think. Didn't know I wanted one of these until I saw your post, but a good deal is hard to pass up.

Your recording sounded awesome, both content and format.

Any tips on how to set up the recorder? Do you just set it on a convenient counter? Do you aim it at the guitar, how close?

I don't play anywhere near as good as you do, but I'd be extremely happy if my sound capture sounded any near as good as yours.

thanks again,

Blueser100 04-05-2014 01:17 PM

Well I ordered one on GC online, got a confirmation email and then a second email saying they were backordered. I think in order to get the $10 e-coupon whatever you bought has to be "stock on hand." The website basket didn't say backorder though...

Anyone get backorder notice? Do you think they will still honor the e-coupon?

seannx 04-05-2014 03:05 PM

Thanks for the heads up! Ordered one about 9:30 am pdt, and got the notice it had shipped at 1:00 pm.
For Bluser100, Maybe you could call GC's customer service number and get clarification re: the back order, discounts, etc.

When I saw this thread I had to stop by my local GC and check it out. Sure enough, $59.99 with a $20 mail in rebate and a $10 gift card. You CAN'T beat that!!:D

Anyways this was my first recorder and so I played around with it for a few minutes and thought I would upload a clip. I am a terrible guitar player so everything that sounds displeasing from this clip is 100% my fault and not the recorder or guitar :)

If you are interested in the guitar I am playing, it is my custom build that I received this month from a local luthier in NC. Here is the build thread if you are interested

For those of you that want to hear my clip recorded with the TASCAM DR-05 please click below. Again sorry for the lousy playing…
