Help identifying tuners
 

This came up at the end of my thread for cleaning help ... now I'm looking for help identifying the tuners on this 1988 Yamaha FG-405. One user suggested they might've been covered originally, which might explain the slop in the key/worm gear, which is binding badly on a couple of them.

My hope is if I can identify them I can replace them without having to drill. Any suggestions on type (and where to look for used replacements, maybe?) would be most helpful. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure that ORIGINALITY! is so important , especially in a 1988 Yamaha. I would just replace those sloppy unknown tuners with some reliable new replacements and be done with it, with some hole filling, new drilling, and imprint repairs of course.
You can find many suitable tuners from StewMac and other suppliers.

I guess I didn't make it as clear as I could in my original post -- I'm less interested in originality for originality's sake than I am in finding a drop-in replacement for the sake of ease. A $50 campfire guitar doesn't deserve much finish repair, but it also doesn't deserve me messing up a drill hole or something. ;-)

I agree. I would replace those with some sealed Gotoh 510s. Btw, I see nothing to indicate that those tuners were ever enclosed. As has been said, they were cheap.

That’s not a slur on Yamaha, which is a fine company, it’s just that at that time they were trying to put a product on the market as cheaply as possible. Likely, they were never expected to last this long. I had some enclosed Kluson machines on an old Martin D-18 that I had. I replaced them with Shallers. It happens.

Those may or may not have had sheet metal covers, but it would have no bearing on the sloppiness. Basically, those style of tuners are the bottom of the barrel, in my experience.
Unfortunately, I don't think the Elderly tuners will be much better.

I don't know if the mounting holes line up and I certainly wouldn't vouch for their smoothness and/or tuning accuracy.
