DR Rares have unusual packing

They come packaged in pairs but it's string 1 (high e) and 4, 2 and 5 (low E), etc. I wonder why that is? Is it because they want you to string in that order?

Simple answer; so you can easily tell them apart. As an example, there are lots of folks who would look at a 1st and 2nd string and not be able to discern which was which.

Almost certainly not.

I'd guess it's likely that it's because the strings making up the packaged pairs are sufficiently different sizes that they won't be confused with each other when you've removed them from the packets.

Ha! Sorry Rudy - cross posted! :ha:

That makes sense.

Savarez packages their strings this way as well. And yes, they are easily identifiable this way.

I think almost everyone packages their strings this way except D'Addario which has colored ball ends to designate string gauge.

Martins have always been packed 1,4; 2,5; 3,6

I like to change strings in odd pairs on the superstition it reduces sudden tension drop on the neck. the sequence the DRs are paired in their packs is perfect for this

Most of the strings I have used come in a separate envelope for each string so this was new to me. But the explanations make sense.
