Gotta Love Banjos!
Okay, so I wanted to lower the action on my new Ozark Custom 12-inch Figured Cherry, so what did I do? I measured the original bridge height of the banjo with digital calipers and found it to be .609 inches high. I figured what difference I needed to get the action height I wanted and ordered a Snuffy Smith 9/16 inch (.562") high bridge from Elderly Instruments two days ago and it just came in the mail. So, I slid the new bridge into position behind the original higher bridge, tilted the original bridge forward, and removed it with the strings now resting on the lower new bridge. I splayed the strings out until all were in their respective groove on the new bridge. I checked the vertical alignment of the new bridge, and then its centering on the head via any middle-string side-to-side deflection one way or the other and tuned the banjo with my PolyTune Clip-On Tuner. Lastly, I checked the intonation at the 12th fret with the tuner and it was right on.
Total time to perform this operation: 10 minutes = Happiness :) |
Yep, I've been having Tim Purcell make me some custom height(.595) bridges(w/ wider Crowe space) to get my action just right.

Excellent solution, Sprucetop!
(There is a bit quicker solution for adjusting preferred action, but the banjo has to be designed to do it.) :) |

It's may not be apparent in your mind's ear but until you actually play a dreadnought guitar with a flatpick immediately after playing clawhammer style on an open-back banjo just how loud your real ears tell you that a banjo sounds! I just finished playing my Taylor 717e Builder's Edition dreadnought after playing my new Ozark Custom 12" Figured Cherry banjo and I'm kind of shocked. Guitars as "banjo killers?" Does anyone believe any of the hype some brands put out there? :)

It’s the voice range of the banjo that overpowers the rest of the band when playing together. It’s like playing a mandola with two guitar players….they bury the mandola.
