What are the chords?? Is he capoed at the second fret??

If memory serves me correctly Rice has the capo at the 1st fret.

PMC, thanks. What was MY ear hearing?? Send me your version of the chorus, please.. I was close to the chords, but WOW. Back to the wood shed for me..

Instead of the Em you could play this chord in its place:

----0----
----2----
----0----
----0----

It has a different ring to it. Sounds off-colored like the CD version to me, maybe a bit closer than just an Em chord. It is awfull close, same as a Em but the A-string is not fretted.

Here is a simple version of the run. It is not note-for-note what Tony does but it captures the jist of it.

I can also tab out another alternative one that I used to use.

You can add more notes in the opening run if you like. Just mess around with it. The last notes after the 3/5-5 slide part can be played up the neck in many different ways. Have fun with it. Any other questions about it just let me know.

I realize I'm 15 years or so late, but this post is still the #1 result on Google for anyone searching for the chords to Rice's version of Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
I used the chords suggested by other users in this thread for a year or more, but only recently sat down for a few hours to figure out the real chord voicings as Tony plays them. They go more like this:

Just before the run, he goes to this version of Am:

--5--
--2--
--0--
--X--

The only one I can't quite figure out is what voicing he uses for the Em that comes after that, it seems to be related somehow to the Em you get from moving your standard Dm shape up 2 frets.

Once again, sorry for being just a tiinnyyy bit late to the party, but this will be useful for people who continue to search for these chords via Google.
