Let’s say that a certain guy was a few years from retirement, loved boats, had a place at the beach and was thinking of getting into this particular hobby. Let’s just say.

What ‘course’ would you recommend for him to take, directionally speaking? Where’s a good place to start? How much skill is involved (no offense to the highly skilled)? What is entry level requirements for tools and such? Where would this guy go to get models and what should he start with?

Well that Bluenose is a perfect first time kit.The hull is pre carved and the rigging is minimal .PM me if interested and I will give you a good deal.I also recommend that you join The Model ship world website.

As for tools,a good Exacto #1 handle with #11 blades,a good set of tweezers,small blockplane,Titebond wood glue,Super glue and some good artist brushes and Tamiya acrylic paint us a good start.Depending on how good your eyesight is,an Optivisor,is good for fine work.I have also found that a variable speed Dremel motor tool essential.

Add a nice sharp razor saw. The Optivisor is an excellent suggestion but they will strain your eyes. They're so much better than an illuminated magnifier.

Is this comparable to an 1937 Martin D-28 in mint, case-queen condition you found at a garage sale for $20?

The kits are expensive so for me to receive them for free is a great score as far as I am concerned!

I've purchased a couple of small laser cut buildings for my O gauge layout. They're nice but too expensive for my budget. Discovered that I can scratch build with good results. Scratch build costs are next to nothing. I like that. :D
