Let's keep the peace.
I read that he would of walked out of a dave matthews show if he heard a guitar sounding like that, did I miss something, did he change his mind? I have nothing against the guy saying that they should think about redoing the live guitar sound, I agree tat it sounds like crap. I'm just saying, and I hope it's not taken the wrong way, in my opinion you shouldnt value sound over the actual music itself, that is imo missing the point. I'm glad he started this thread and I agree with him, but I would challenge anyone to rethink things if they value what a guitar sounds like over what the artist is playing, that' all I was saying. That is the only thing that really made me "mad" over this thread, in reality its probably a bit off topic... SOrry I called you a tone whore and told you to get over yourself, got a little heated .

i know you are going to say D M has a lot of money to change a fancy guitar every week, but for live we use shure mics (57, 58) neumann, shoepps are great ,we hardly use them in stage they are very sensitive ,after a while they have damage(for performing in concert halls are fine) with top guitar is the same .

I haven't read all the posts on this thread, but getting back to the main subject, I have listened to Listener Supported DVD and Central Park DVD tons. I'm only listening thru my standard stereo with descent headphones, but you can't get two much more different sounding guitars than those 2 DVDs. On LS, Dave uses his Martin D35 (whatever the model is), and it has the traditional warm Martin sound with decent high end. But on CP, he uses a Taylor 914cES, and man that 914 is hot, sound wise -- it almost sizzles your ears. I also know on the Luther College CD, Dave played a Lakewood OM guitar, and it does sound a little quacky, but it is still pretty smooth sounding, and nice to listen to.

My point is that I STILL think Dave Matthews is mostly about the music (the fan's experience with the music), and the band. I'm sure DM has a pretty good sized ego, but on stage he seems to be about the band, not about his individual sound.

I don't know anything about DM's sound, live or otherwise. But it doesn't make much sense to me to say someone is just more concerned with the songs, as opposed to the guitar sound they are getting.

Why would you have to choose? Couldn't you still be all about your songs and how the audience experiences them, (or even all about the total band sound as opposed to the individual guitar sound) and STILL want to have best acoustic tone you could possibly have, at the same time?

But my point is, you would think any artist would want the very best acoustic sound possible, in order to enhance the listeners experience with the music.

You don't have to choose between good songs and good sound, right?

I get your point but comparing Dave to these guys is a little unfair. And besides, the guys you listed don't go on the road, they attend limited engagements.

Actually his 914c doesn't use the ES. It's pre-ES and uses a Fishman UST (as does the DM3MD).

All I ment was that I'm still going to have a great time at a concert regardless of what the guitar sounds like. I also believe that what an instrument sounds like does not matter as much to many artists. I agree that you don't have to choose between the two and that you can have both (Or neither in some cases, lol), I'm just saying I'm not going to have any less of a time listening to an artist that has a weird sound and if you can't enjoy a concert based on the way something sounds, I'm going to view you as a bit stuck up. I don't like the way dave's guitar sounds when he plays with the band, but it still sounds like a guitar to me....

I can't believe you wasted 20 seconds of your life that you will NEVER get back to tell us to stop posting about this, regardless of the obvious paradox and hypocritical nature of you posting in order to persuade us to stop doing the same. You're feeding the fire man, let it die . I'm joking around with ya, I don't know why we keep talking about it, I'm having fun.

We should add that if any of us had a life, we wouldn't be posting on internet guitar forums all the time
